We are a big fan of Zone blocking (Inside AND Outside Zone).
Have been asked how WE defend our own offense (zone plays). To us, the answer is not as much X & O (we base out of a 4-2-5), but rather in the TECHNIQUE, as described below (the same PRINCIPLES can apply to ANY defense):
The way to defend zone blocking is the same as ANY blocking (it's NOT "rocket science"):
1. ALL: Be physically tougher & play with greater intensity than your opponent (FAR & AWAY MOST IMPORTANT FACTOR).
2. DLM: Get your second step down before HE gets his second step down.
3. DLM: GET YOUR HANDS INSIDE HIS HANDS (use your "stun guns"). Create VERTICAL LEVERAGE (your pads lower than his pads).
4. LBer: EXAMPLE: Our 30 tech. B gap LB (with a 1 tech. DT inside him) with an IZ AT him.
KEY: G & RB. Make sure you ATTACK the LOS. Get downhill (vertical pressure) RIGHT NOW. Get no width (so 1 tech will be single blocked), & set an anchor point on the ball.
5. EVERYBODY (including secondary run force): Maintain gap integrity - CREATE HORIZONTAL LEVERAGE (don't get cut off from your gap responsibility).
PS: THIS is really what it takes:
"We believe and teach our boys they must be more aggressive and "out-mean" our opponents if they expect to win with consistency. If we "out-mean" and physically whip our opponents by hard blocking and tackling, and we are consistent in doing it, we'll win a lot of football games. Football is a contact sport, and we must make the initial contact. In order to be a winner a boy must whip his man individually, and the team must beat the opponent physically".
