Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
we are going from a split front to a 4-3. my inside backers read guard to near back because we see a lot of guards pulling. i was wondering what is the best read for the sam.
We teach initially hat of the TE, high hat, pass read, low hat run. Our guys struggle at first with the difference between an inside pass release and a down block on the DE, but reps solve this. We play our Sam both over the TE and off the LOS. Over the TE we always ask him to get his hands on the TE, and our guys have said the reaction of the TE helps to tell them what he is doing. Off the LOS our guys have more time to read him, but with no contact or feel for where he is headed, find it a little tougher. Off the LOS we teach to read near OT if they're not sure. the OT we face are pretty good indicators if the TE dosn't show immediately.

Coach, our inside linebackers read near back and our outside linebackers read end man on the line of scrimmage. In any even front defense, this is the easiest way to teach linebacker reads. Also, I suggest Coach Campbell's Multiple-40 manual, which will go into greater detail about the reads. I hope this has helped.

We run a G front here and teach our Rovers basically to read the high/low hat of the tightend when we stem into our Bear. On either a down block or inside pass release, the Rover is to engage and make sure the tightend's route is flattened to the line of scrimmage. Its a tough thing to ask with a pass responsibility so we will usually play man or man free in that front. Its key, though, to feel pressure and I can see the confusion in teh players early in the season. It reminds me of the confusion our inside backers might see when they see outblocks and outside Zone steps to the 2nd level by the Guard and whether to take a lateral step to gain a step on the Zone play or come right downhill on an inside run.
