How to Execute a Football Handoff
Whether you are in a high school locker room teaching players the techniques of the game or coaching young children, the football handoff is an important play. Just having fun in the backyard with friends and family warrants a successful handoff.
Difficulty: Moderately Easy Instructions
1 Learn the proper technique to execute a football handoff because this is a crucial part of winning a football game. If the technique is not executed properly, you'll fumble the ball and lose control of the game. A handoff usually occurs between the quarterback and the running back.
2 Execute a football handoff by starting with the quarterback. If you are playing the quarterback position, you must hide the ball with your arms against your stomach as soon as you receive the ball from the center.
3 Get ready to hand the football off to the running back. With one arm across the upper chest (palm down) and the other arm across the stomach (palm up), the running back is in position to receive the ball. This arm positioning acts as a vice when closed. The quarterback places the ball in between the arms of the running back with the football in the horizontal position. When the running back feels the football on his chest and stomach area, this triggers his arms to clamp around the ball.
4 Prevent a fumble by using this technique to execute a football handoff. This technique conceals the football if the arms are properly positioned at the top and bottom of the football.
