Coaches,
I seen this play; A teams breaks the huddle, lineman get in preset (2 point), recievers set up, then the center looks at the ball and before touching it and starts saying its the wrong ball, the OB walks up and looks over his shoulder and says hand it to me (the snap), the QB then walks trhough the entire D-fense and walks towards the ref as if he was gonna give him the ball, then makes a mad dash for the endzone. Everything in this play was legal, the refs were informed about it before the 2nd half started, the team that ran this was far enough head that the game was theirs. In your opions, is this a cheap shot? Has anyone ran anything likes this before, has anyone faced anything likes this before? If you think there was nothing wrong with a team ahead running this play, What If the team had ran this play to take a lead/win the game would you think it was a cheap shot then?

My two cents on this subject. As a coach, NEVER do anything on the field that would compromise; 1) player(s) safety/health, 2) chance for victory, 3) your or opposing team's integrity, and/or 4) your character. With that being said, as long as it is legal - all is fair in love and war.

We run reverses, and reverse passes a lot. But, they are in our regular gameplan. We try to run our 'specialty plays' as soon as possible. This forces the defense to think about it.

But, remember.......Be prepared for it to happen to you!! Many can dish it out, but most lack the intestinal fortitude to take it. Trick plays have there place, but running it in garbage time.............? There must be something more to this story that's not posted.

Back when I seen this play, I was still in high school and I was friends with alot of guys from both teams. The team that ran the play has always been known as a powerhouse in the 1AAA. I asked guys on the team why'd they did it, they jsut said "because we could". The two teams were not rivals by any means. I also always thought there was more to the story. I just posted all the information I knew on it. I have always been a fan of "twisted football" running plays out of over load sets, running shot gun on the goal line, just plays to make the defense play with their heads up, but I don't think I could ever do anything like this. I agree with you 110% about not treading on the opposing team's integrity. Thanks for the input!!

It's not a cheap shot if it is legal. Once my team was losing 31-6 and the opposing head coach (a friend of mine) ran a fake punt with three minutes left in the game. Hey, that's life! If you can't handle that stuff, get out of the profession. If we weren't good enough to win the game, then we deserve whatever happens to us.
It's never a cheap shot as long as it's legal. Just like Warren Sapp's hit on the Green Bay Packer offensive linemen. TOUGH! Football is a collision sport, and the sport involves 48 or 60 minutes of pure collision. Buckle up and get ready for anything!

That play under those circumstances is as CHEAP as it gets. What is the point of running that play at that point in the game? We try to teach our athletes about integrity and respect, as well as sportsmanship. Isn't that the reason we shake hands before and after games? Also from a practical coaches stand point, if you had any intention of running that play when you really needed to, you just alerted your whole conference to the play, which everyone will now be ready for. Lastly, if a coach pulled that nonsense with me, I'm running student body sweep directly to that teams sideline, and you can guess who the number one blocking assignment is!

Coaches,
I agree with Coach Cella. He is right on. I do not buy into this old school philosophy that you do not run up scores or use trick plays. It is all legal and the kids are old enough to deal with it and remember it. I personally would not run up scores I would take advantage of the situation and play kids that normally do not get to play. As far as trick plays goes if you are depending on them to win games you better prepare to get your resume out. Because any coach knows you have to run the ball and stop the run (BLOCK AND TACKLING) to win games. However, I have gone over to other coaches and let them know what goes around comes around. In addition, some guys buy into SUN TZU Art of War : Make your opponent fear you. Crush them when you have the chance. All the hype of mtoivating kids with it and newspaper clippings, and pep talks are great until the ball gets kicked off.

Just my thoughts
