This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Be sure to check out Jerry's excellent publications.
Here are three great versions of the 5-3 (if there are Any QUESTIONS = please PHONE them to me rather than by posting on here). 804-740-4479 (between 11 AM & 6 PM/EASTERN).
ENDS: 2 point stance. Inside foot on inside of TE's outside foot and read him. Work vs. down block, turn-out block, reach block, and kick-out (or trap). Vs down block — close down (will both squeeze kick-out or trap, and/or wrong shoulder it - varies game to game). Vs turn-out block - bench press him down. Vs reach block — smash him in the mouth and work outside. NOTE: On SE side — align on the OT.
TACKLES: Outside shoulder (or eye) of OG and read him. Work vs reach block, turn-out, down block, and pull. Create new LOS 1 yard deep in backfield. Vs reach block — smash him in the mouth and fight across his face. Vs. turn-out block — smash him and squeeze him down. Vs. down block — you close down. Vs pull — get in his hip pocket.
NOSE: Head up on Center. Smash into Center and go THRU Center's block (cross his face — your head to side his hat goes).
MLB: 4 yards deep directly behind the Nose. Read the "triangle" of the OG's and the QB. (?Pattern read #1 & #2 with OLB?).
OLB: 3 yards deep. Line up on inside (leg) of TE. On SE side align on slot (3 yds deep). S/S type athlete. Take 2 steps in direction near back goes and look back for counter/trap/etc.
E: Head up 6 technique. Rip thru inside shoulder of TE. C Gap resp.
T: Inside shoulder 4I technique. Rip thru inside shoulder of OT. B gap resp.
N: Head up 0 technique. Play to TE side A gap.
OLB (double Strong Safeties): 1 yd. outside DE & 5 yds. Deep. If TE blocks DE — quick run support D gap at LOS. Cover 1 (man on #2 receiver) or Cover 3 Zone.
MLB: Stack behind Nose — 5 yds. Deep. . Resp. for A gap away from Nose's charge (check it before pursuing). Cover 1 (man on #3) or Cover 3 Zone.
CORNERS: 5 yds. Deep. Play either Cover 1 Man or Cover 3 Zone.
SAFETY: 10 yds. Deep. Play either Cover 1 Man (F/S) or Cover 3 Zone.
NOTE: Very easy to adjust vs. 3x1 set — the weakside OLB (S/S) simply goes over to the 3 receiver side (just inside #3).
1. Test young players (look at everybody). 2. Put players in right position. 3. A) Control the L.O.S. (when you have the personnel capable of doing this). B) Move & stunt like crazy (when you don't have the personnel to stay in there & control the situation). 4. Tackle well. 5. Eliminate mistakes (stress pursuit angles). 6. Emphasize the little things. 7. Do not panic — stick with it. 8. Pursue like hell ("hats on the football").
MULTIPLE DEFENSIVE FRONTS
1. Run a base 50 front 5-3 (that can slide the LBers to a 5-2 Monster vs. 3x1 sets). 2. 5-3 to 5-2 Monster without personnel changes. 3. This gives us the flexibility to adjust to different offensive sets. 4. Gives us the ability to adjust to D&D situations. 5. Gives us the ability to change the way we attack people at half time w/o causing confusion to the players. NOTE: Work 6-5 Goal Line everyday.
DE — 9 Technique. Take 1 step across & come inside to force. Pitch on option. Contain pass rush (take B across your face on screen/flare/etc.).
DT — 4 Technique. Slant OR Pinch with "Rip" technique:
A) "Slant" call TO your side = Rip across OT's face with backside forearm & put your outside shoulder to TE's inside hip. QB on option. B) "Pinch" call, or, "Slant" call AWAY from your side = Rip across OT's face with backside forearm & put your inside shoulder to OG's outside hip. Dive on option.
NOSE — 0 Technique. Slant with same technique as DT's.
A) "Slant" call you usually will slant to the OG on the call side (usually TE side). B) "Pinch" call — the MLB will give you the direction. Dive on option.
MLB = Stack behind the Nose. Key Fullback in I (or single back in 1 Back set). Take A Gap responsibility opposite Nose's slant. Dive on option.
OLB's = Align in C gap. Take a read step with inside foot & read Tailback (or back away if not an I).
A) "Slant" away from you, & "Pinch" — basic C gap responsibility. QB to Pitch on option. B) "Slant" to you — B gap responsibility. Dive on option.
ENDS: Outside eye of TE (or wider). If TE a good receiver — align more head up and hold him up. D gap responsibility (QB on option). Use inside flipper. Outside pass rush (take back out if he crosses your face). NOTE: On "RED" call — move to outside eye of OT (split end side).
TACKLES: Outside eye of OT (almost head up). C gap responsibility. Hard initial charge using inside flipper. Stay on the ball. Keep OT off MLB. NOTE: On 'RED" call — move to outside eye of OG (split end side).
NOSE: Head up on Center. Two gap responsibility — OT to OT — both A gaps. Use two hand incline press on Center.
MLB: 4 yards deep behind Center. Two gap responsibility — OT to OT — both A gaps. Read FB thru OG's. Use inside flipper on blockers. Vs Pass — Hook to Curl (read QB's eyes. — go strong side to a depth of 10 yards). "SLIDE" call mover to two receiver side.
OLB: 4 yards deep directly behind your Tackles. B gap responsibility - but only when the ball is in the hole — (take Pitch on most options). Read TB on thru OG's for Counter. Use inside flipper on blockers. Vs. Pass — Curl to flat (read QB's eyes). NOTE: "RED" call on split end side — move out to half way between OT & slot man (5 yds deep). "SLIDE" call move to two receiver side.
SECONDARY = COVER 3 (Corners = 2nd man on pitch on option).
