How many of you guys are teaching your db's this technique? We saw it at a camp a couple of years ago and have been teaching it the past 2 years. What are some of the disadvantages to it's use??
Coach I have personally struggled with the shuffle technique. When I played I leard backpetal and plant and go. It's hard for me to teach my kids to shuffle then backpetal. I think that the technique is great as long as they do it right. The idea of shuffling before the backpetal is to read the quarterbacks drop. If it's a three step drop you break on the receiver. If it's a five then your corner knows to backpetal and turn and run. This techique only works when the corner is about 7 yard off the ball. I think that the corners have an edge if they can read the quarterback and still read the route of the receiver. So I hope that I have helped you out. If you have any questions let me know.
We teach it to our CB's but the players have had a tough time with it. They feel that if they do this, the WR will beat them if they don't get into their backpedal. We started off teaching this technique as a way to slow them dow to read the QB. As the season progressed, we backed off stressing it and allowed them to either, slide or take three slow backpedal steps. If you were to start teaching this technique from the freshman level and stick with it all the way through their senior year, I think it is a great way to go, otherwise, i would do what works for the players.
