Who invented the 3-4 defense in American Football?
The 3-4 defense was created by Sooners coach Bud Wilkinson, around 1947. Also called the Oklahoma defense back then.
Hank Stram did use the 3-4 in the 60s, but he took a page from Bud. And the 80s Bears used the 46 defense, not the 3-4. Buddy Ryan is a 4 man D-line coach. He also coached the Vikings purple people eaters.
The 80s Bears used a front 4 and 3 LBs. They brought up a safety to defend the run, putting 8 men in the box. That isn't a 3-4. Buddy coined it as the 46. A 3-4 uses a front 3 with 4 LBs.
