Our Head Coach (HC) is in charge of our Special Teams and he feels like this is a big step in showing the importance of Special teams to all of our players. Our HC makes all final decisions on personnel but always accepts input from the other coaches. He is also the one that makes all game day decisions as far as punting, going or faking a kick. Our goal is to "win" the kicking game every week and not just hope for the best. We are not opposed and often put our best players on Special Teams. Our HC has adopted a philosophy to show the significance of Special Teams where he will get a "star" player a blow on Defense or Offense rather than Special Teams. He has set the bar high in this area and has created a great mindset for our team in regards to the importance of Special Teams. It is also an opportunity, and one we want all of our younger players to take advantage of, to "earn" time on these teams. If they are busting their tails and earn a sport where we can get someone else off of it that might need it, it benefits all of those involved.
We practice our Special Teams Tuesday through Thursday. On each day we will do punt, punt return and extra point-field goal. On Wednesday we will add our kickoff and kick return. On Thursday we will do all of them on the game field and be sure that we are two deep in each position. We also remind our back-ups that if they see the guy in front of them injured or nicked up during the game, it is their responsibility to be in the next huddle that they need to be in on.
We are looking for players with desire and who a give consistent effort. Special Teams is not a play off and our HC has changed that culture over the past two seasons.
