I think a character leadership program is something that all athletic programs must have in one shape or form, but they do not have to be cookie cutter. Character in my opinion is something that the coach begins teaching early in the season with speeches and what not. He should always reference our programs core character traits in some shape or form when addressing the team. All players are taught and expected to display high character. Leading and being a leader is a very interesting topic. One of the smartest people I have ever interacted with said this about leadership; Not everyone can be a leader, and you should not want a bunch of leaders. Instead you should want a select few leaders. The most important people are the followers. You want a lot of really good followers on the team.
This idea has really opened my mind to ideas and possibilities. Because of this I have not found a leadership system or program that I feel really strong about yet, but this one is what works for us right now. The program we use is called our "leadership council". This is a group of kids that is voted on by the team with the core character traits we preach in mind. By having players select the group it brings legitimacy to the group and the team feels more comfortable being represented by this group than if the coaches selected them. The problem with this strategy is two fold. Firstly, if you do not do a good job early and often throughout the year then the group may turn in to a popularity contest instead of a group that is truly an accountable group. Secondly, we know all kids make mistakes and we preach forgiveness in our program. Inevitably, one of the kids on your council will make a major mistake and we have a very sticky situation. This group meets every other week at lunch and can be called together at a moments notice if we need immediate action. The weekly meetings will focus on being a leader and how to better be a leader. Various formats are used to teach and share within the group. The group is also involved in our determining our discipline / accountability system as well as providing an easy pulse check for the team. If a major issue or something we do not have a plan for arises with a team member this group will be mobilized and an onspot vote will be made about the outcome with the HC's direction. The goal with this program is to create a group of high character men that has only a handful of leaders. These leaders are expected to lead the right way, and the rest of the team should learn to be good followers. We don't want everyone aspiring to be leaders. We want people that can find a great leader and not question, but be great followers with high character.
