I believe that assistant coaches can easily be evaluated for hire by breaking down their overall skill level into the following four categories; Coaching Skills, People Skills, Organizational Skills, and Personal Characteristics.
Coaching Skills- Ability to teach the fundamentals, Promotes discipline and strategies for maintaining it, Believes/Develops TEAM unity, Practices Safety in his/her drills and overall approach to the game, Embraces the PROCESS not just the PRODUCT, Buys in to the Head Coach/Programs Vision and overall approach toward development, and Educates players on appropriate behavior/citizenship on and off the playing field.
People Skills - Communicates well with his peers, Believes in professional growth (Doesn't have all the answers), Approachable, Non-Combative with peers/players, and Excepts criticism.
Organizational Skills - Exhibits proper care and for all equipment and facilities, Commits/Plans for appropriate time for the program, Organizes efficient/productive practice sessions, Delegates responsibility when needed, Promotes participation from ALL players, and Follows all district/school/program rules and guidelines.
Personal Characteristics - Practices poise and composure at all times, Practices fairness on and off the field with his/her players, Punctual, Maintains positive relationships with players/peers, Maintains professional/appropriate appearance, and IS ENTHUSIASTIC AND MOTIVATED.
The bottom line is that Assistant Coaches are looked at as an extension of the Head Coach. They must perform their daily coaching obligations with same passion and discipline. We tell our Assistant Coaches to approach the position as if they were the Head Coach. If they can do so the program will always be moving in the right direction without any conflicts or confusion.
