Great assistant coaches are hard to come by, but to me they are the most valuable piece to a program. As a head coach I would like to be surrounded by like-minded, but not just "yes men". I believe it is important for the Head Coach to lay out exactly what his philosophy is and what he expects from his Assistants and for them to take his lead and run with it. A good assistant coach is committed and cares deeply for the growth of the program. Coach Campbell makes a great point for assistants when he says. "don't run off right after practice, pitch in there's always something to do".
I believe a great assistant coach represents himself and the program in a professional way at all times. They do not belittle players or give any negative press to the program. Whether it be through their actions off the field away from the players, or with interviews with the press. I believe that it is important for assistant coaches to show respect for one another, even if they may have a difference in philosophy.
A program and staff are only as good as their weakest link. It is up to the Assistant Coaches to continually be improving, whether it is through dvd's, conferences or books. While many Assistant Coaches want to move in to a Head Coaches spot, it is important that you are loyal to your program and players. Coach Groce, the head men's basketball coach at Illinois said something interesting at a conference this summer. He said, "coaches, don't be in such a rush to get your next job. Be loyal to your kids, administration and coaches for getting you where you are today". I believe only through loyalty and continuity can a team be truly good, it is of the upmost importance to hire Assistants that you can trust and will have the programs best interests first.
