Our defensive philosophy is pretty standard for most high schools in our area. We are usually in a base 4-3 and make adjustments out of it. Our philosophy is "fast, strong, breakdown", which is posted up in the weight room as well as it is on most of the hand-outs that our defensive players get throughout the year. Our DC likes to bring a lot of pressure, usually from the backside. We have been fortunate to have some very good linebackers in the past and they made great reads. We play a lot of man coverage in the early downs, then go to a cover 2 or 3 in passing downs. We also run a 4-4 , but didn't as much last season. Much of the spring ball is spent on developing proper tackling techniques. Making proper, safe tackles is of great importance to the coaching staff.
Our league is made up of teams that traditionally run the ball 70% of the time, so many hours are spent on pursuit and breakdown. One pursuit drill that we do, we call 30-40. We have the 11 defensive players, chop their feet and do a down up. At the same time we have 2 players on each sideline as well as a fullback and quarterback. One of the sideline players is an O-lineman and one is a running back. Once the down-up is happening, the players take off. The fullback and quarterback, run an option, the play-side corner and safety must make the read and breakdown to them, while the backside safety pursues the qb down field as well. The other players are taking off to the opposite side of the field and pursuing the 2 sideline players. The goal is for the D-lineman to catch the O-lineman before 40 yards and the linebackers to catch the running back before 30 yards. We also do traditional toss breakdowns with running backs and linebackers, then progress off of it, with more players.
