A head coach should plan his practices out in advance. Planning is the key to making a practice run efficiently. Coaches should all be on the same page and learn the practice schedule before going out onto the field. The kids should also understand what is going to be going on at practice that day, so there is less time used on explanations and more time in drills and skill work. This should be taken care of at the pre practice meeting. Communication is essential in running an effective practice, from the head coach all the way down to the players.
Practices must be up-tempo and fun for the kids and the coaches. Kids play football because they want to have fun and coaches coach because they love the game and working with young people. By keeping the kids moving, motivated and keeping to a timed schedule, we can have high energy practices and enjoy what we are doing. By breaking the practice down into 5 minute periods, the players will be constantly moving and coaches will be able to coach their players at high levels. Every day we must get great work in and practice with a purpose. Players should strive to better themselves every day, as well as the coaches.
If there are a lot of coaches on the staff, they all should be utilized. By utilizing all coaches for drills, the players can be divided into smaller groups which create a better teaching and learning environment. For example, if there are two coaches in the running back group, one can instruct the fullbacks and one can take the tailbacks. This allows more room for reps and more individualized instruction.
