Coach Sampogna
Just like there are 3 levels in any defense, we have 3 levels of P.A.D.s. There are 3 P's, 3 A's, and 3 D's in our Defensive Philosophy.
3 P's- Polite, Professional, Prepared to Play.
3 A's- Alignment, Assignment, Attack.
3 D's- Dedication, Desire, Determination.
Our defenders will be polite in their actions to the opposing players, coaches, referees, etc, as well as our institutional members. They will be professional on how they conduct themselves on and off the field, keeping the program standards, principles, and integrity before every action. Even though they will be polite and professional to others, they will be prepared to play and do whatever it takes to accomplish team goals.
Our defenders must know and execute their alignment on the defensive side of the ball. Once they're in the proper alignment, they will execute their individual assignment that is designated by the defensive strategy. Once they're aligned and understand their assignment, they will attack the ball carrier and football.
Our defenders must dedicate themselves to training their physical, mental, and emotional attributes, in order to become a dominant force on the football field. They must dedicate their time in the classroom, weight room, film room, practice field, etc, in order to become a better person, student, athlete, and teammate. They must have the desire to accomplish their goals for one another and themselves. There must be a fire in their desire, motivating their actions to become better, each and every moment they're engaged in an activity. Regardless of the outcome of each session, our defenders must have the determination to do whatever it takes, week in and week out, to achieve victory.
The most dangerous football player, is not the strongest, fastest, most athletic, or toughest athlete...it is the smartest and most prepared player that poses the bigges threat. Our defense will be focused on preparing for each team by implementing P.A.D.s into our practice week. A defense "plays fast" when they are mentally prepared and understand the game. Smart and prepared football players can make up for their lack of speed, strength, toughness, and skill, by taking better angles, having better techniques, and reviewing tendencies and the opposing team's playbook during film sessions, walk-through periods, and practice preparation.
Our TEAM PHILOSOPHIES will also be applied to the standards of defensive performance.
1) Never Give Up
2) Never Quit
3) Never Give Up On Your Teammates
4) Never Let Your Teammates Quit
5) Stick Together
Pursuit Drill: "11 All, On the Ball!"
To begin this pursuit drill, position your defense in it's base alignment and/or the defensive strategy for the week. This will put your players in their natural positions for this drill.
The scout offense will line up with only their Center, QB, RB(s), WR(s), and TE(s), in their primary, secondary, or miscellaneous formation, that you expect to face during the game this week. The scout offense will have a play ready to run when the drill begins. The eligible backs will execute the designed play when the ball is snapped.
When the ball is snapped, defensive players will perform one "up-down"/"grass drill" and quickly return to an athletic position. The offensive backs will become "rabbits" and run the play full-speed, and attempt to score.
Every defender must get to the ball! Defenders will not tackle or slow up the rabbits, instead they will show a break down tackling position where they meet the offensive back. This will prevent players from touching the rabbits with one hand and claiming that they were in the position to make a play. We want to see that they positioned themselves to attack the rabbits and potentially make the tackle.
Once the offensive player scores/is in the end zone, every defender will leave their current break down/tackling position and surround the ball carrier. When all 11 players are around the ball, the MLB or Captain of the Defense will say, "11 ALL!" and the rest of the defenders will yell together, "On the Ball!" The idea of adding in the group chant will help push players to reach the ball carrier, regardless if they're first or last, and be a part of that bonding experience. It will measure their intensity and desire to get to the football and finish together...even if it is in the end zone. "Hustle, Hit, and Never Quit!"
