The Importance of Establishing a Leadership Program
Leadership is critical to the success of any team or organization. The importance of establishing a leadership program is for all athletes to focus on character development, leadership and team-building skills, developing trust, citizenship, time management, communication skills and goal setting. The best time to develop a leadership program is during the off season because time will permit a dedicated focus to tailoring it based on what has worked in the past and planning for the future. It is not likely that every component of a program works right away and adjustments may be necessary. The off season is the time to make these adjustments and craft the program based on taking advantage of the team's strengths, building on the weaknesses, and building other future leaders. It is also a good time to assess whether or not the goals and visions for the program are on track and if not, adjust those also to fit the team's assets.
Pros and Cons
There are several pros and cons for establishing a leadership program. The pros include having an opportunity is to make a difference in the lives of young student athletes. This allows the players to then make a difference in the countless lives they influence as they play on the field and in everyday life. Also, there is nothing more important that developing a young person's character while they are in those formative stages of making career choices after they graduate. It is during this time that instilling leadership skills matter. Many athletes tap into their leadership skills and move into very influential careers, such a politics or even becoming a coach. Whatever the career choice they make, having a leadership program that gives them a foundation for basic life skills and being strong leaders will have lasting impacts on their lives.
Cons include the possibility that athletes may fall back to the norm after the leadership skills are taught in the program. In other words, in order for the program to work, there must be a continuity of messages and continual positive influence on the athletes. Also, if there is a lack of mentoring and following up on the athletes' progress, there is always a chance they may digress back into old habits. It requires a constant checking and reinforcement of the leadership skills in order to make a difference. It is definitely not a great feeling to know that you have worked really hard to help develop character within a great leadership program and a player that had such great potential fell into a trap or mischievous behavior because of other negative influences. But, because of these cons, there is always a chance that someone will not understand the benefits of a good leadership.
Implementation of the Program: Days and Time
Each component of the Leadership Academy Leadership will be divided into classes with different leadership topics to be discussed each week over a seven-week period. The program's design and implementation is as follows:
Each class will be held on Sunday evenings from 6:00 pm — 8:30 pm.
Athletes will be provided a full meal at the end of the program.
Each class may have one or two guest speakers who will share a special message regarding a specific leadership skill and how this skill benefits the athlete.
Each topic is presented by a volunteer instructor who has skills in the area, clearly understands how to effectively present the material so that players maintain interest, and can get the player's actively involved in the discussion.
Each weekly meeting will consist of two topics followed by open forum discussion. There will be a banquet at the end of the program, with certificates of completion presented to each athlete for full participation. Parents and coaches are invited to be in attendance as support for the athletes and to share in their personal success.
