I believe in order to run a successful program that the head coach must have a plan and outline for the entire year. This plan must include direction and activities for both the off season and in season. Organization and dedication is key to this. Although our goal is to be successful during the season with a thorough offensive, defensive, and special teams approach, the off season is where I believe the foundation is created and laid. Like most things associated with football, if we do not have a strong foundation to build upon then everything we do thereafter will not hold its own. A strong base is important to the success of a football program and this is done throughout the entire year and constantly referred back to.
Attached is a yearly organization power point that I have kept after attending a football clinic several years ago. It was created by a high school football coach Jeff Steinberg who now coaches at Santiago HS in Southern California. It is very organized and in depth and a helpful tool that I refer back to often.
Defensive Approach
The key to our success starts with you the player coming everyday with the right attitude, desire, and determination, to improve and do their best on every rep snap or play. Hard work and dedication is something that every one of you is capable of doing regardless of talent level. It's up to you whether or not you choose to push yourself each time you step onto the field.
We value teamwork, hustle, and execution. As a defensive player, I will always seek to be in the position I am supposed to be because the team depends on me to account for my defensive responsibility. I will trust my teammates to account for their assignment, and in doing so, we will be in position to make the play. Once we are in position, it becomes an issue of execution. I must execute my technique and give maximum effort in order to make the play. Through teamwork, hustle, and execution, we will be a swarm of eleven hungry Lions zeroing in on the ball, punishing our opponents while looking to create takeaway opportunities.
Offensive Approach
Running Game — Using primarily man blocking technique due to big strong offensive lineman complimented with physical running backs that run downhill and grind out the tough yards we will use our primary running plays to establish a powerful and physical running game.
Passing Game — We will set up the passing game by establishing a strong running attack. Play action power boot pass off of our #1 run play will be our primary passing play along with a step back with a vertical option/read, and four verticals with choice routes from the two outside receivers.
Special Teams
To have a strong kicking game you must make a commitment to the time and personnel. The head coach must set aside specific time towards working special teams in each possible practice. This period does not have to be extremely long, but it must be a daily occurrence. Players will recognize the commitment to special teams and this sends a message of its importance throughout.
Leadership
Players must be taught how to act accordingly. Good character and leadership are essential qualities players must possess in order to be successful citizens in the community and amongst society. The Lion's Den is what we call our weekly meeting of the team's leaders. All seniors and a few respected underclassmen meet with the head coach to talk about the team's leadership and direction. This is a time for the players to voice their opinions about specific issues from the team as a whole, and also a time for them to learn how to properly lead the team.
