Wondering if i could get some feedback from a coach...
My 8 yr old is the 13th man on an 8-yr old team with only 13 players. he is also autistic, and as a result has limited focus, it takes him awhile to learn things, etc.
At their last game (with no shot of the playoffs), a "star" player showed up w/o his helmet. i cringed: i knew what would happen. I heard the coach say, "just get [my son's] helmet." the other kid had it for the 1st half -- until his mom went home & back. My son was just so confused. he came to the sidelines and asked me, "how come xxx has my helmet?"
after the game the coach said "sorry for the mix-up." the assistant: "what did you want us to do? who did you want us to put in on receiver?" I didn't want them to put in my son -- I just didn't want them to make him feel badly for something that had nothing (i think) to do with football.
I feel worse than my kid about this, I know, but I just hate the message it sends him.... am i wrong? I'm not sure if this is standard practice, or not a big deal -- perhaps i'm just overprotective of my son.

In our program I would have sit the starter down started the 12th man and would not have taken your sons helmet because I understand your concern from experience.
