My defensive philosophy will be based on stopping the run. An effective run stopping defense must be disciplined a have a tough physical presence. We will expect our defensive players to play hard from whistle to whistle.
DEFENSIVE THEORETICAL GOALS
1. TREAT THE OPOSSING TEAM WITH RESPECT
2. READ KEYS, PURSUE THE BALL, TACKLE WITH A VENGANCE
3. STOP THE RUN (squeeze down inside, force to alley)
4. CAUSE TURNOVERS
5. HOLD OPPONENT SCORELESS
6. SCORE POINTS ON DEFENSE
COACHING DEFENSE
1. FUNDAMENTALS
Attack, Move, Tackle
2. POSITIONAL ALIGNMENT, STANCE, ASSIGNMENT
Checks by call
3. PERSONELL ABILITIES
Report changes in play and attitude
4. YOUR WEAKNESSES AND POSSIBLE ADJUSTMENTS
Communicate thoughts to each other
5. STUNTS AND BLITZES
Rotate players
The coaching staff will place our players through drills on a daily basis. The objective behind those drills is to create confidence in each individual so they can play with the greatest possible speed on the football field. Each coach will arrive to practice on time to prepare to sell our philosophies to our kids. The coaches will not come unprepared, because the kids will recognize that. This may lead them to second guess you, which may lead them to second guess themselves. Your preparation can help build your positional players confidence.
POINTS OF EMPHASIS DURING EVERY DEFENSIVE PRACTICE SEGMENT:
1. MENTAL STRENGTH
2. MAKE THE BIG PLAY
3. CREATE TURNOVERS
4. CREATE DEFENSIVE CHOAS
PANTHER DEFENSE GAME GOALS
1. WIN THE GAME
2. HOLD OPPONENTS TO UNDER 12 POINTS
3. HOLD TO UNDER 100 YARDS RUSHING
4. HAVE FOUR SACKS
5. NO BIG PLAYS: RUNS OVER 15 YARDS, PASS OVER 25 YARDS
6. FORCE AT LEAST 3 TURNOVERS
7. AT LEAST FIVE THREE AND OUTS
8. SCORE A DEFENSIVE TOUCHDOWN
9. NO MENTAL PENALTIES
10. MAKE ALL "BIG PLAY" OPPORTUNITIES
DEFENSIVE PURSUIT DRILL
• Four defensive linemen align on their backs three yards apart. Their heads are on the line.
• The coach (QB) with the ball aligns five yards up field between the two inside defenders.
• Two target receivers (managers) holding balls align five yards downfield behind the defenders.
• Upon the command of the coach (Go), each defender must quickly get to his feet and rush the drop-back or sprint-out quarterback.
• After the quarterback challenges the pass rush with his movement, he simulates a throw to one of the targets.
• Upon the quarterback's throwing motion, the defender makes a snap turn and sprints at full speed toward the target receiver. The receiver is holding the ball tightly in both hands and extending his arms forward at the height of his knee.
• Each defensive lineman must slap at it and touch the ball as he sprint past.
KEY POINTS
• Defensive ends must maintain their contain responsibilities during the pass rush.
• The coach insists that the defenders run at full speed with a high intensity effort to make contact with the ball.
• If the coach is not satisfied, the drill is repeated.
• The drill may also be run with one, two, or three defenders instead of four at a time.
