WEEK 9 DISCUSSION: Expectations of the Kicking Game
A. STAFF ASSIGNMENTS
The former head coach at DGSouth took on the responsibility of coordinating all the special teams. As assistant coaches we would "coach up" a particular position on each team. There was nothing really "set in stone" and at times would step on each other toes regarding special team techniques and philosophies. When the new head coach at DGSouth took over he decided to delegate responsibility for all special teams to his assistant coaches. Listed below are the special team assignments for the DGSouth eight man coaching staff
SPECIAL TEAM COORDINATOR
1. Kick Off Team (including Onside) Wide Receiver Coach
(Post special team assignments in varsity locker room)
2. Kick Return Team (including Hands) Quarterback Coach.
3. Punt Team Running Back Coach
(Also our "head" scout team coordinator)
4. Punt Return Team
5. Extra Point / Field Goal Offensive Line Coach
6. Assistant Scout Team Coordinator
Head Coach / DC / Inside LB Coach
and Kicking Coach
7. Assistant Special Team Coach
Defensive Line Coach
8. Saturday Specialist & Scout Team
OLB Coach
(Provide initial special team report along with personnel, and cut-ups to all special teams coordinators)
I have included an example of the DGSouth Kick-Off Team, the philosophy, and the individual assistant coaching responsibilities on pages 3 - 4.
B. EXPECTATIONS
Each special team coordinator will receive an initial scouting report from the OLB coach. The OLB coach is our "Saturday Specialist". His report will include the opponent's alignment, personnel, tendencies, cut-ups, and statistics for all special teams. He will be working with the sophomore staff to complete the report. The coordinator will use that report to finalize his game plan. After the offensive and defensive staffs have completed their reports all special teams coordinators will give a brief overview of what his plan will entail for Friday Night. The coordinator will also send cut-ups via email to all assistant coaches and DGSouth personnel to study before Monday's practice. During Monday's "scouting report review" each coordinator will introduce his weekly game plan to the entire team. Each coordinator will provide pertinent information for all assistant coaches to utilize during the "specialties" segment of practice. Also during this Monday meeting the coaching staff will make personnel adjustments based on performance or injury. Finally, all coordinators are also responsible for leading his special teams segment of practice and then reviewing game film on Saturdays with the entire team.
C. PERSONNEL
Our belief as entire coaching staff is to put the best 11 football players on the field at all times including special teams. Each coordinator will be responsible for "coaching up" his team and getting his personnel to "buy in" to that particular special team philosophy. To increase special teams enthusiasm coordinators will name their special team unit (Kick-Off = Flyin' 40), post goals, name weekly captains, and hand out stickers for making "big" special team plays. Players at DGSouth know they have to earn their way onto a special team.
D. WEEKLY SPECIAL TEAM SEGMENTS
Day Special Team Time
Monday Specialties 10 minutes
Extra Point/Field Goal 10-minutes
Tuesday Specialties 10 minutes
Spread Punt 10 minutes
Punt Return 10 minutes
Wednesday Specialties 10 minutes
Kick Off 10 minutes
Kick Return 10 minutes = 80 minutes
• Specialties — Assistant special team coaches will work with personnel at this time to prepare them for the each segment.
Thursday Pre-Game Script (will include all special teams)
