As the head coach I will take the role of the special teams coordinator during the weeks practice. I will breakdown the opponents film, and prepare a game plan for the coaches to follow for the week. On Monday we will review the Punt team, and talk where we want the ball punted for that week. The Punt team for us is the most important team on game night. This team dictates field position, and of course we do not want a punt ever blocked.
Tuesday and Wednesday during the padded practices we will work on the Punt team and all the situations that will come up during a game. We have regular punt, pin punt, and end zone punt, and all of these can happen on game night. During these two days we will work kickoff team on one of the days, and kickoff return the other day. During the two days of pads we will have punt, kickoff, and the kickoff return all installed for the weeks opponents. We will end practice with Field Goal, and the block team each day.
We have the script review on Thursday, and during this day we will review every special team, and more importantly every game situation in special teams. We have to do onside kick, take a safety with the Punt team, safety kickoff, etc. Working the situations with the team will show the players we will be well organized for any situation on game night.
The players we look for on these teams are the hardest working kids during practices. We have no problem playing starters on the special teams, and this is usually in some of the most important roles. The Punt team will be filled with ten of the best players we have. Kickoff team will be filled with the kids who want to be on it, and who show us the effort that they deserve to be on it. The Kickoff Return team is filled with a fast front five who can block, and the rest of the team is all players who can handle the football if it comes to them. Punt Return is my nightmare of a special team. Here it is the defense has worked itself to force a punt, and we do not want to mess it up with an offsides, to many players on the filed etc. If the ball is on the near hash we will rotate a few kids to give the main guys a break. We always have the most trusted player back who can handle catching the punt as the return man. Since the gunners on Punt, and the corners on Punt Return play a lot, we have rotated here with some great players who play with a lot of effort. Bottom line for us is to play the kids who deserve the playing time. Know one will play just to please a parent or a kid, but if you work hard you will play.
As for staff assignments the three line coaches will handle the field goal and block teams. They will work against each other at the end of each practice. The receiver coach, running back coach, and defensive back coach will handle all the returners and skill positions on all of the special teams. My Offensive Coordinator will handle the Punt team, and all the personnel choices for this vital team. As the head coach I will work the blocking of the kickoff return team, and the inside players on the kickoff team. I have a great staff that works these positions really hard, and we are always looking for effort and speed over size at all the spots. We blocked a Punt that lead to a huge touchdown in a big upset. We scored the go ahead touchdown on a kickoff, and 90% of our kicks never got past the 20 yard line last year. We take great pride as a team in winning this phase of the game.
