Having a "Leadership Academy" is the most important part in player development during the off-season. An off-season leadership program to allows players and coaches to lead one another in a positive environment to build their confidence, self image and character attributes. I feel having a Leadership academy will turn a program into a great one.
Pros of a leadership academy,
1 It provides stability for player to develop on and off the field and as well in the classroom.
2 Builds relationships with players, teammates, coaches and the community. Which will make the atmosphere a grat one.
3 Players learn a sense of respect and love for one another. If they chose to miss a day of workouts, character, or leadership development, they're missing a day from helping the program get better and achieve the ultimate "team goal".
4 Maintains a positive atmosphere thruout the locker room and school.
Cons of a leadership academy,
1 Players missing out on team building exercises and having that divide between those who show up consistently from those who don't.
2 Making players over confident in a controlled environment to the point that when they're faced with a real situation. We built certain player's confidence up to the point that when they began to fail or felt helpless, they reverted to their old days.
3 Having players who are against the program, who may influence players in a negative way that will effect the program in a bad way. The most challenging part is not to build the players who buy it, but to reel in the ones who reject the principles and values. Some players are so hard headed and stubborn and hate to be told what to do.
Having Academy Leadership will transform athletes at all levels into effective leaders who can energize others to accomplish team objectives and create the ultimate goal of having success on and off the field in life.
