We run two main series - the ZONE & GAP "schemes". Before teaching EITHER, we must master the fundamentals of individual blocks. Below is how we teach those (the most important stuff in our O-Notebook):
BLOCKING FUNDAMENTALS
STANCE:
Align in a 3-point stance. Explosive and balanced to enable the blocker to move in four (4) directions with vertical leverage (feet close to parallel). Down hand aligns outside of the "near" eye. The off arm-elbow is tight to the rib cage. Eyes are up (strain thru the eyebrows).
LANDMARK:
Point of aim, target. Area on defender to place the hands and direct the feet.
LEVERAGE:
A. Vertical: Pad under pad (PUP)
B. Horizontal: Lateral
FOOTWORK: (Step at landmark with vertical leverage).
A. First step = directional; playside — 6" step — step at the landmark. Adjust your first step to the horizontal alignment of the defender (I.E. width and depth). Cock elbows.
B. Second step = quickness to get this step down to create power and suddenness. Arm thrust!
HAND PLACEMENT:
Thumbs up with the elbows in tight to your framework.
FINISH!!!!!
TECHNIQUE PRINCIPLES:
1. Eyes go to landmark.
2. Maintain knee bend.
3. Keep chest on thigh.
4. Put weight on your insteps.
5. Keep the elbows tight (hands squeeze the defender's rib cage).
6. Hips should be behind your shoulders.
7. Have knee drive; do not allow your feet to get beat.
8. Finish with good (vertical) posture and explosion.
INDIVIDUAL BLOCKING TECHNIQUE: we work on the following 3 blocks (in addition to Pass Pro):
1. DRIVE:
A) Lead step with near foot.
B) Aim down the middle (if alone), or outside # (inside zone). This is "angle of departure".
C) Fists under short ribs at base of numbers.
D) Get the second step down for power (don't cross over).
E) Climb, drive, and sustain.
2. REACH:
A) Lead step with near foot.
B) Aim thru outside # (if alone), or outside arm pit (outside zone). This is "angle of departure".
C) Inside fist under sternum & outside fist under arm pit at short ribs.
D) Get the second step down in defender's crotch for power (may cross over)
E) Climb, drive, and Sustain.
3. DOWN:
A) Step with inside foot at a 45 degree angle (roughly). This is "angle of departure".
B) Aim hat at defender's near shoulder and adjust to the man's charge (hat in front or behind of near shoulder).
C) Gain ground on second step and get it down.
D) Inside hand in defender's mid-section & outside hand under arm pit or on bicep.
E) Drive and sustain.
