Assistant Coach Expectations
Be a great teacher
I am looking for a coach who understands the art of teaching and reaching.
Exemplify discipline
The assistant coach should be a model of discipline and expect nothing less from his players.
Do their job to the best of their ability
Like players, it is understood that coaches will have off days or poor performances. I, however, will always expect my coaches to coach, teach, and lead to the very best of their ability.
Demand perfection
My assistant coaches will undoubtedly set the bar high for our players. We will not be satisfied with good effort and quality outcome, but will always strive for perfection. What can we do better? How can we improve?
Find their niche, understand their role with the program
Each coach will be assigned responsibilities. As a head coach, I will assign responsibilities according the the strengths of the coaches on my coaching staff. I will attempt to but them in a situation in which they will only succeed. Each assistance coach needs to own and understand his role in the program and on our coaching staff.
Prompt
More than anything, this demonstrates to our players our coaching staff's commitment to excellence and pride. Our coaching staff will always show their eagerness by being no later than 15 minutes early for all functions.
Take pride in their responsibilities
Each assistant coach with have their very own responsibilities. In order for our program to succeed, each coach must take pride in and follow through with all of their assigned responsibilities - and then some.
Never undermine the head coach or the program, maintain loyalty
The entire coaching staff will always maintain loyalty to the head coach and one another. They will NEVER undermine the coach or voice their disapproval to anyone outside of the coaching staff.
Invested in the program and our players
It takes time to establish and maintain a successful program - much more than time spent during practice or games. Each assistant coach needs to realize this responsibility. Time, effort, and commitment are the main three areas of investment I want our coaches to focus on.
Always remain positive
This is something I have continued to develop throughout my coaching career. I understand it take time and desire to improve, but the benefits of staying positive are endless.
Be a great communicator
Within the foundation of every successful program lies quality communicators. Even if the outcome is negative, I know proper communication will insure the most desired outcome.
Be able to handle constructive criticism
Another word for constructive criticism is coachable. How can a coach coach without him being able to handle constructive criticism himself?
Get the very best out of the players
Great coaches know how to get the most out of each player. This is a skill that each coach must develop. If each coach can reach each player, our team will be in great hands of outstanding leadership.
Maintain professionalism, even during stressful and difficult situations
Coaching creates many difficult situations. I need to know that members of the coaching staff will always maintain a clear, cool, and level-headed approach to all trying situations.
Power and decision-making will be delegated amongst the coaching staff
Our team will be most efficient and successful when each member of the coaching staff has power and responsibility.
Be knowledgeable
It will be expected that all members of the coaching staff be hight educated and knowledgeable in the sport of football. As the head coach, I will take it upon myself to teach the workings and assignments of the offensive and defensive side of the ball. I will also make sure my entire staff attends several coaching clinics and professional development opportunities throughout the calender year.
Willing to serve
Each assistant coach MUST have a servant's heart. At the high school level, it is understood we do not coach for the money. Each coach must be willing to server other members of the coaching staff as well as the players he is responsible for.
