Friday after the game we will receive the game film. I will upload the film into Hudl when we arrive to the school Friday night around 11:00pm. We exit the building around at 12 Midnight. While on the bus and while we wait for the locker room to clear the offensive and defensive staffs will discuss how they feel about our execution of the game plan and any other pertinent information that the game reveals about our team. I find this conversation to be very meaningful because most coach's if not all will think about the game all night. To get some immediate comments or feedback prior to in depth thought gives the coach's other point of views to consider while reflecting.
On Saturday we arrive at 7am. We grade the film and assess the goal chart. Most of my coach's will report with their work already done in the morning, I don't tell them to do it at home, they are just passionate coach's who stay up late working. It does expedite the process. The players will arrive at 8:30am for training room and a quick stretch, wind sprints and lift. Team meeting will begin at 10:00am. In the meeting I will discuss whether we met our goals and what areas we need to improve on. This conversation is about us, our team, not our previous or current opponent. I take this opportunity to have meaningful conversation about anything the players want to talk about. I normally just ask a simple question like whats going on or anybody got something they want to discuss. Usually the players are waiting for this opportunity and have a list or a team leader ready with concerns or comments. At 10:30am we will begin offense and defense meeting with film. We will only meet with them for 30 minutes. We want to just emphasize the main improvement points. If we get through 10 clips I am happy. The players will watch the film on hudl on their free time, we just try to inform them about improvement points as they watch. We will serve the players and staff lunch provided by the booster club.
The coordinators only assignment from 7:00am - 10:30am is to have the previous game clips and improvement points ready for the unit meetings and the game plan for the next opponent. After lunch the coaching staff will meet and discuss the game plan and practice schedule for the week. We will leave at 2pm or until finished but we usually leave at 2pm.
We do not have practice or meetings on Sunday (Family Day)! On exception if the staff feels that we need additional time we will meet at 2pm to finish planning. It is normally suggested by an assistant coach.
The players will access to the previous game until Saturday at at 12 midnight. It will close out and they will only have access to this weeks opponent. They will have assignments and position specific quiz's. The home work is to watch the film and know your opponent and what they are trying to do. Watch the player that you will have your individual battle with and learn his strengths and weaknesses by 2pm on Monday.
On Monday we will have position specific and unit meetings before practice to install the game plan. We try to be basic at the beginning of the week. We won't be exotic until late Tuesday or Wednesday. The emphasis will be on tackling, pursuit, ball handling, the fundamentals as we install the game plan. We wear full pads on Mondays as it is the first work day of the week. It is our toughest day and longest day of preparation and conditioning. During the season we don't do much full contact. We mostly do quick whistle, thud.
On Tuesday and Wednesday we wear full pads. As the week progresses so do our installation of the game plan. We install blitzes, audibles and adjustments.
Thursday we will be in shells. We will cover game situations on this day. Some of the situations are Goal line, Backed Up, No Huddle, 2 Min Drill, Prevent Defense, Goal line Defense, Tight Punt, Onside, etc. We try to create as many game like situations as possible with different scenerio's. Thursday after practice the players receive an Ice Bath to recover and get fresh legs.
Friday Is Game day!
The Coach's responsibilities are assigned by the assistant coach's strengths and likes or dislikes. I assign all responsibilities and I have found through experience that you get better production when coach's are allowed to do what they want to do. I will usually be assigned to the responsibilities that I don't have covered. This is done at the beginning of the year with little change of responsibilities as the year progresses and our routines are set. In conclusion we haven't had much turn over in the staff the past six years so we understand each other and gladly except our responsibilities. We are a TEAM!
