Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
1. USE HORIZONTAL WIDTH OF FIELD. Stretch the defense from sideline to sideline. a. Expansion and Contraction Theory (Tighter WR splits for outside patterns to tighten the defense; Wider WR splits for inside patterns to spread the defense). b. Disguise the splits on runs.
2. STRETCH THE VERTICAL LENGTH OF THE FIELD. Vertically from the line of scrimmage to the end zone. a. Blow top off coverage deep with deep throwing threats. To do this, however, you MUST throw deep. b. Expand the intermediate zone by throwing deep. c. Throw deep quickly (three-step, five-step drop). Don't let receivers outrun the QB's arm with 7 step timed drops. You CAN throw deep effectively with an average-armed QB if the throws are quick (3 or 5 step drops).
3. ROUTE DEPTH BY TIMING OF PATTERN DESIGN. There must be a coordination of the timing of the QB's: a. Three-Step Drop = 5-6 yard routes. b. Five-Step Drop = 10-12 yard routes. c. Five-Step & Bounce = 18 yard routes.
4. WR COACHING POINTS: a. VS. ZONE: = Throttle (Settle) in the ZONE VOID. b. VS. MAN: = Separate from the Man Coverage and MAINTAIN the separation (don't "separate and throttle" because the defender will catch up with you).
