How do you teach your Dline to know the difference between a down block and jump through? It seems to me the initial step of the Olineman would look the same on both blocks. Also what technique and stimulis repsonse would you incorporate for the jump through? Thanks in advance

Coach Mac, Great question. I make sure that every stimulus response has the first two steps by the d-line identical so they never have to worry about their feet and explosion. First step is a 6 inch Lateral second step is a banana step... Our aiming point is the adjacent offensive lineman. we tell our players that offensive lineman can do 4 blocks and we will practice those 4 blocks a million times a day. First block we teach is a down block meaning the blocker is coming at us. We tell our kids that a double team, down and base are all the same block so we treat it the same way. We will rep these everyday.. The next block we teach we simply call an away block (I think this is what you called a jump through). On this block we see the adjacent lineman go away so we shoot it. First 2 steps are the same on the 3rd step we rip to protect ourself from the only lineman who can block us that is the one we were over. We tell our kids away blocks are Pulls any block when that lineman goes away from us. We will now rep those two everyday... The next two are a little more difficult and need A LOT of REPS>>> When we get a pull opposite of our slant we cross-face or spin back. We know if someone pulls we are going to get collision from the lineman towards the pull. So I give them the option of cross-face back or to spin back if the Offensive man head is in front. This takes a while to get but after enough reps its as easy as the first two. The 4th block is an away block but maybe counter and or trap is coming back at us. We will blow up pullers... They love these... We will not try to crossface instead take lineman out. Hope this answers your question PGOLLA
Coach Golla, We are a one platoon team with no spring practice or athletic periods. I am coaching Dline (50 defense) for the first time at the H.S. level. We are in a league which is 3 yards and a cloud of dust. We don't have the practice time to use all the hit tech. drills you have in the video, and we also don't have a lev sled. If you had to narrow it down to 4-5 drills which ones would you choose. Also which 2-3 pass rush tech. do you find to be most successful. The videos were top of the line! Thanks

Coach Mac, We are also a one platoon team. I make sure I get 20 min of individual work with the d-line every other day. I also use before practice time to work with them. In 20 minutes I can get all these drills in, we are very fast pace temp and I video tape every practice with them so I can take it home to watch. Every Day Drills Dominate Leans with Hand Rolls Shoots (Get-offs and Bags) 5 man sled one day 1 man the next day Slant technique (Bag Rip) Stimulus Response Base' Down Reach Double Pull Down,Down I will do pass rush moves before practice. Since like you we only play to passing schools we do not spend a lot of time on them. Plus when I teach them they love to do it on their own. Its kind of like the bench press, they just love doing it and showing off.
