I love the Option on Me concept and think it really gives players a chance to be very successful. How does this concept pertain to a team that runs the Spread as its base formation? Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
We are a spread team that uses the option on me concept a couple different ways. With no tight end (3x1 formation), you can check speed option to the side with no extra man on the overhang. If you do have a tight end, you can check to load option to the tight end, or speed option away, again based on the ideas of overhaning defenders.
We are a true spread offense (2x2 and 3x1) and we incorporate the option on me based on a combination of the invert rule and a "tighter tackle" rule...Midline to a 3...inside veer to a 2i or 1...freeze option to an 2i or 1....load to a reduced 5. Would be happy to go further...pdow

Coaches- Thanks for the responses. Have you ever tried running the triple back to the vacated invert? Coach 'Em Up and pdow27, how often do you give your QB "the keys to the car"?
Yes..we do run to the vacated invert as that is one of the things that determines where we run the inside veer. We check in our first 10 play script how a defense is going to adjust to our motion...if we motion an inside receiver and the invert runs across, we will run the option back to the vacated side. Our QB has a relatively great deal of flexibility...he is instructed to look each play for "gimmies" (uncovered receiver or soft coverage)...he will change a play at the LOS or opposite call a play (which we do quite extensively in the option game). We will have a two year starter returning for his senior year at QB so he is very well versed and comfortable with what we are doing. pdow
My last reply crashed, so I hope this isn't a repeat....
I think the more experience your QB has, the more comfortable he will become with the "keys", and the more you can run check with me's. The bottom line still is how much time you want to invest to teach your guys how to check to the best play. We really like this idea and spend a lot of time working on it.
A quick question for pdow. Can you further describe your midline option from a single back look. I'm assuming that your single back becomes the dive back and a receiver must come around to be the pitch back.
We check the midline to the wider def. tackle (3 vs. 2i)...when we do motion an inside receiver we use him to block frontside LB'er (as the second back does from a two back alignment)...we virtually never use a pitch man--it's either a give or a keep..and depending on the number in the box, we might not motion a receiver at all. Freeze option has proven to be an outstanding complement to this play. pdow
