The following is a handout I gave in teaching (along with Chester Fritz) a one semester course in "COACHING FOOTBALL" at VCU:
TEACHING METHOD: There are two broad theories of learning/teaching:
1. In one, the teacher gradually builds up a total picture by teaching the “parts of the whole”, one at a time.
2. In the other “broad-based” (“whole-part-whole”) theory, the teacher presents the larger picture first and then fills in the details.
NOTE: Pick ONE of these (with younger players I liked the former; with older more experienced players I liked the latter).
"LAWS OF LEARNING" (you learn by):
1. SEEING IT (cutups on film)
2. HEARING IT (coach lectures on it)
3. WRITING IT (keep notebooks)
4. DOING IT (over and over until it becomes ROTE)!
WHY DO WE HAVE A PLAYBOOK:
1. To carry out our theories of learning - we learn by seeing, writing, listening, reviewing, and by practicing on the field. To learn, it is essential that you study this playbook diligently.
2. To have everything on record, you are responsible for everything in the book.
3. It aids with terminology and to indoctrinate the new men.
4. Serves as a review for our veterans.
