WHAT YOU MUST HAVE (& DO) IN THE JOE GIBBS-STYLE ONE-BACK OFFENSE:
By Coach Bill Mountjoy (if there are QUESTIONS = PHONE me at 804-76-7038 = in Va. because I'm too busy to TYPE replies)
6 BASIC FORMATIONS:
1. DOUBLE (2 TE/2 WR)
X--------------------O-O-C-O-O-Y
------------------H--------Q-----------------------------Z
----------------------------R
2. DOUBLE H-FLEX (1 TE/3 WR) H Flexed 5 yards.
X--------------------O-O-C-O-O-Y
-------------H-------------Q-----------------------------Z
----------------------------R
3. TRIPS (2 TE/2 WR)
X--------------------O-O-C-O-O-Y
----------------------------Q----------H----------------Z
----------------------------R
4. TRIPS H-FLEX (1 TE/3 WR) H Flexed 5 yards.
X--------------------O-O-C-O-O-Y
----------------------------Q-----------------H------------Z
----------------------------R
5. FLOOD (2 TE/2 WR)
--------------------Y-O-O-C-O-O-----------------------X
----------------------------Q--------H---------Z
-----------------------------R
6 FLOOD H-FLEX (1 TE/3 WR) H Flexed 5 yards.
---------------Y-O-O-C-O-O------------------------X
------------------------Q-------------H--------Z
-------------------------R
NOTE:
A. 2 TE/2 WR gives a "7 man box" 8 gaps to defend.
B. 1 TE/3 WR normally removes one man from an "8 man box".

METHOD OF DETERMINING OFFENSE/DEFENSE NUMBERS MATCHUP:
Draw any offensive formation, and place any defense against it (front & coverage alignment). Then draw a perpendicular line through the Running Back, Quarterback, Center, and on through the defense, so the line extends beyond the deepest defensive back. Then count the men and see which team has the most men on each side of the line (Note: If the line runs THROUGH a player, he is counted a HALF a man on both sides). If the defense has an equal number on either side of that line, that is a BALANCED defense. If the defense has the most men on either side of that line, that is an OVERSHIFTED defense. EXAMPLES:
A) BALANCED DEFENSE: In this example (vs. our “Double” formation), the defense is BALANCED with 5 ½ men to each side. The offense is also BALANCED with 5 ½ men to each side:
-------------------S-----------------S
C---------------------------------------------------------C
--------------------V-------V-----V
----------------------V--V----V-----V
X--------------------O-O-C-O-O-Y
------------------H--------Q-----------------------------Z
----------------------------R
B) OVERSHIFTED DEFENSE: In this example (vs. our “Double” formation), the defense is OVERSHIFTED with 6 men to the TE side and 5 men to the SE side: The offense is BALANCED with 5 ½ men to each side (“Trips” would give the offense 6 ½).

SPLIT END RULE (USED ESPECIALLY TO SPLIT END SIDE IN TRIPS & TRIPS H-FLEX):
A) DO RUN to the Split End side if the Center is uncovered and there are no more than 3 men in the “box” to the SE side of the Center, OR, if he is covered and there are no more than 2 men in the “box” to the SE side of the Center. EXAMPLES:
--------B
----V----V
-----O-O-C
--------B
----V------V
-----O-O-C
------------B
----V---V
-----O-O-C
B) DON'T RUN to the Split End side if the Center is uncovered and there are 4 men in the “box” to the SE side of the Center, OR, if the Center is covered and there are 3 men in the “box” to the SE side of the Center. EXAMPLES:
---B---B

-----O-O-C
