I am the Defensive Coordinator for Bedford-Sackville Minor Football in Nova Scotia, Canada and a first time Linebackers coach (my specialty is Defensive Line).
Has anyone actually came out with a list of skills and techniques that a linebacker needs to learn in order to become a successful player on the field? If any of you can think of any additional skills that a coach should teach a linebacker, feel free to comment to this thread.
I want to be really fundamentally sound this year to help develop my players after having a couple of seasons where fundamentals wasn't a focus (different Defensive Coordinator before this season).
My list includes:
Exploding Out of the Stance (First Step and Respective Footwork)
We spend the majority of time with our linebackers on only a handful of things: tackling, run fits, and block destruction. We don't talk about stripping the ball because we believe more tackles are missed trying to go for the ball and we'd rather make the tackle. As for pass defense, we don't talk about man coverage because we don't use man principles, so for pass defense we work on zone drops and breaks after they drop to their zones.
