QB AGILITY DRILLS
I. Strider Drill (warm-up drill):
a. Running in long rhythmic strides.
b. High Knee lift & extensions.
c. Always on your toes with upper body relax & elbows hanging.
II. High Knee Drill (warm-up drill): Emphasis on both feet hitting inside cone in a 1-2 rhythmic fashion.
a. Rhythm is more important than speed.
b. Eyes should focus ahead and not on the ground.
c. High knee lift about waist level.
III. High Knee Drop Drill (3 command drill): Emphasis on knee lift being compared to up & down piston like action.
a. 1st command: QB jumps out of stance exaggerating high knee action on every step.
b. 2nd command: QB should break down & shuffle forward without crossing over his feet.
c. 3rd command: QB tucks the ball away and runs.
IV. Cross-over Drop Drill: Emphasis on gliding back on cross-over step in a rhythmic fashion.
a. 1st command: QB pushes out of stance with emphasis on cross-over. Key point: Slight body lean reaching as far back as possible while maintaining relax body position.
V. One Step Drill: Emphasize to pull the ball back in the cocked position before the 1st step hits the ground.
a. During 1st step drill, exaggerate high knee lift while reaching back for depth. Eyes should be forward at all times. Freeze after taking your 1st step.
VI. 2nd Step Drill: Emphasize here is to isolate the crossover action that takes place during a QB’s drop.
a. Key is to sink the hips slightly which allows for a longer crossover step. Make sure you maintain rhythm throughout the drill.
VII. 3 Step Drill: Purpose of this drill is to establish rhythm in the 3 step passing game (1 big - 2 little).
a. 1st step: Should be for depth gaining separation from center.
b. 2nd / 3rd step: Should be small break down steps. By properly breaking down on the last 2 steps it allows the QB to transfer his weight on to his front foot thus providing power & accuracy to his throw.
VIII. Drop and Shuffle Drill: Emphasize the basic 5 step drop with shuffle / hitch step forward. Key is to always stay on your toes.
a. Drill begins with 5 step drop (3 big – 2 little) then QB takes a shuffle sideways or forwards with feet shoulder width apart. Important: Never crossover unless you are dropping back.
b. Eyes should always remain forward with the ball in a relaxed throwing position.
c. Maintain a loose upper body while working on quick feet.
IX. Quick Five Drop Drill: Emphasis of this drill is to help the QB become more proficient on throwing a 10 yard pattern with out taking a hitch step.
a. The point in this drill is the QB must break down in his last 2 steps and get on his front leg immediately after his 5th step.
X. 5-7 Step Hitch Drill: Emphasize proper depth on 5-7 step drop.
a. 4 key components to performing this drill properly are always keeping your eyes up.
b. 2nd is to break down on the last 2 steps.
c. 3rd is stepping up in the pocket.
d. 4th is staying on your toes at all times.
XI. 5 Step Kick Drill: Purpose of this drill is to provide the QB the opportunity to practice re-adjusting his feet while having to move laterally in the pocket.
a. The QB will take a 5 step drop. On command the QB will step laterally with his back foot. Key to this drill is to reset your feet quickly while maintaining that relaxed throwing position.
XII. 5 Step Wave Drill: Purpose of this drill is design to help the QB react faster to the sudden pressures that can take place in the pocket.
a. The QB is to react to a coach’s command in a forward, backward – side shuffle motion. Key points during drill is to stay on your toes throughout the drill with eyes forward and shoulders perpendicular to the LOS.
b. Very important, maintain relax throwing position throughout the drill.
XIII. Roll Out Pass Drop Drill: Emphasis on throwing off the right leg and run at the intended target as you release the football.
a. When throwing to his left, it is important to establish an 8 step throwing rhythm (3 BIG – 5 LITTLE STEPS). QB should count his steps to himself breaking down / gathering on the last 4 steps specially the last 2.
b. When throwing to his right, it is important to establish a 7 step throwing rhythm (3BIG – 4 LITTLE STEPS). Make sure shoulders are square to the target when throwing on the run. There is a big tendency to sway from side top side.
XIV. 5 Step Hitch Forward Drill: Purpose of this drill will give QB’s practice on stepping up versus a hard outside rush to the open side.
a. The QB will take a 5 step drop. On coaches movement or on his own the QB will step up in the pocket. As always, maintain balance and proper throwing position.
XV. 5 Step Hitch Spin Drill: Purpose of this drill will give QB’s practice on escaping a hard inside rush to his backside.
a. The QB will take a 5 step drop. On coaches movement, the QB will reverse pivot and spin due to coaches hard rush to the inside at a 45 degree angle and reset his feet at a depth of 8 to 10 yards.
b. Coaching Point: It is important for the QB to get his chin over his right shoulder as quick as possible to gain vision downfield.
XVI. Screen Drill: Purpose of this drill is to teach the QB to be patient when setting up to throw the screen. This hesitation draws the defense in.
a. The QB will take a 5 step drop. After taking his hitch step, the QB will sit for a 2-3 count. Then the QB will back peddle keeping his shoulders perpendicular to LOS as he releases the football.
