I have a question that I hope someone can help me with. I have read all over internet and get mixed signals no matter where I look. What are the initial read steps of an OLB on the snap of the ball if you are running a base 4-4 Defense and OLB's are lined up at 4x4 off last man on LOS? Some have said lateral, some have said one step up, and then others say no steps at all. I was just wondering what a majority of all the coaches on here teach.
I) Stance (Zone Cover 3) a. Inside foot up, weight forward, feet slightly more narrow than shoulder width b. Eyes on EMLOS thru to the QB and Back. Peripheral vision on the wide receiver. c. Shoulders parallel to the LOS. d. Knees bent, butt low, chin up, chest out. e. Hands – relaxed, in front. f. At the snap take a read step – one step forward with your front foot, your back foot slides forward, but you remain in your stance. Reads i. Flow to you – Stay low & ATTACK! Squeeze the play. Keep your shoulders parallel to the LOS. Be ready to take on blockers with your inside arm (forearm shiver). Keep your outside arm free. Maintain outside leverage. You are responsible for D gap or outside containment. ii. Flow away – Stay low & Eyes to A (gap). Shuffle, shuffle, check for counter, boot, reverse, and screen then sprint to pursue the ball. iii. Pass – You are responsible for the CURL/FLAT ZONE (from EMLOS to the sideline and from the LOS to a depth of about 10 yards). If receiver #2 takes a vertical release drop with him to about a depth of 8 yards and redirect him to the MLB, then stay low & open step/hips to the sideline. Swivel head to find No. 1 receiver then get eyes back on QB (chin on your inside shoulder). Angle drop with cross over steps. You must get width first. This will vary depending on field position, offensive formation, and your alignment. Generally speaking the tighter you are too the ball the more crossover steps you have to take before you can start your back pedal. Conversely, the wider you are from the ball the fewer cross over steps you’ll take before you start your back pedal. Once you get the proper width start to back pedal. Keep your head on a swivel…eyes reading QB’s eyes and also checking receivers in your zone. Remember if there is a receiver in front of you, there is probably one behind you! Play your zone! Once the QB’s off hand comes off the ball – break to the ball! Your aiming point is where the ball and receiver are going to meet. Make a play – if you can intercept the ball, do it. If you can’t intercept the ball, knock it down. If you can’t knock the ball down, make a secure tackle on the receiver. No YAC for the opponents!
