It is simply a 15X15 pit filled with sand and the kids do sprint work and agility work in it. It has worked marvels for team quikness. We ain't very fast in our forty times but in our ten yd times we are very quick. Hope this hepled.
Does anybody else use the sand pit? Well it is not really a pit. We didn't dig a whole cause then there would be a great deal of dirt to dispose of. What we did what take railroad ties and and anchor them to the ground with thick metal pipe hammered into the ground like nails. In the off season when we are doing active rest, we have them particpate in volley ball games in the pit. It helps there leg strength with out them realizing it. I still haven't figured out hoe to get a one man sled in there yet, but i'll keep trying. :-)
I coached in Florida for long years, and we had a great sand pit! We called it the beach(3 blocks from school) and I used to run the kids on that sand everytime I got the chance. After running regimen was complete, I used to let them swim. That hydrotherapy coupled with the cardiovascular workout, it was the greatest! Put up a volleyball net, loosened the sand in an area we had marked off for the games, until it was about ankle deep and had at it. Great for everything from your ankles to your glutes! We had a lot of fun, and the kids really loved it! Bottom line, they were conditioning and never even gave it a thought.
