I've read a lot of the threads on here about creating off-season buy in and off-season workouts, but I wanted input on an idea we've been throwing around as a staff. The school I am at has a history of being really bad at football. We've had 3 winning seasons in 30 years. Most of the other boys sports do pretty well throughout history, but there isn't much buy-in for football.
In a school of 650 kids we have about 55 that come out for football. Of those 55, probably 30-40 play other sports. I promote playing other sports as much as possible. The cupboard isn't completely bare. We usually have a few good athletes who play and some decent size kids, but they lack a lot of strength.
To get kids in the weight room, we've toyed with the idea of automatically giving anyone who makes 90% of the off-season lifting a varsity jersey no matter age or ability. We only have 45 varsity jerseys to give out. If you are a senior and you don't make the 90% of days then you may not get a jersey if there are none left.
I figure we've been losing with a lot of upperclassmen who don't work hard anyway, so let's try to promote those who do. Thoughts on this?
At first I figured if you're in a sport you must make 90% of your practices to count, but recently I've thought about 50% of the off-season lifts. That is only asking them to lift twice a week, before or after school. Thoughts?
I am open to any other suggestions you may have! This is my first off-season with the program and we need to get the ball rolling now. A lot of kids don't want to play because we've been so bad. If we could win a few games this year I think we could get the ball rolling.
