Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.

I have always liked running the spread offense, with balanced formations (spread, wing, slot, and ace), two receivers to each side and one back. Well, I have always wanted to try an option attack and now would like to incorporate the spread option into my offense. I am looking for any information possible on the spread option offense or someone who uses a spread offense with the option included.
I am looking for running plays, passing plays, motions, play calling, reads, and anything else that I could possibly use to get this started.
We run alot of option from 2x2 and 3x1 formations utilizing motion w/ inside receivers and sometimes no motion at all. We run the inside veer, midline, load and freeze options and much is based on defensive structure as to which option and where. A combination of identifying the tightest defensive tackle and the outside inverts alerts us to the play to be run. Our most productive options last year were the inside veer and freeze options. Freeze is complemented by the freeze trap which is nothing more than the traditional guard quick trap to the fullback...freeze option is a fake of that trap and taking the ball to the perimeter. I utilize much of the information received from this site as well as Coach Campbell's option manual...including the load which we ran some this year but intend to run more of this next season. pdow
I think running, load, veer, and midline out of the 2x2 double slot formation and then shifting to true 2x2 spread passing formation, getting in the shot gun, and running counters with the one back an quarterback is a tough scout for the defense.
Few thoughts:
Have an athletic QB: Option and shotgun is the answer
Not a big, pound it out team: Misdirection, option, and WR screens
I was an I team for years. I have bee researching the Nortwesterns, Grand Valley States, Valdosta, watched old game film of Hal Mumme. I really think creating space for athletes is the way to go!
Give passing formations, give the illussion of releasing 4 and 5 receivers, and run the ball!
Anybody out there who coach in the northeast where weather is a factor have any thoughts on what I think is the new age of football? The days of 2 tight ends, full house football is over??
Some good points....and it's also effective running your option game from the true spread...we don't ever run the double slot, but rather stay in the spread and utilize motion. It can also be run from a 3x1 reading the inverts for best option...and then, of course, your passing game. pdow
Yes...I run inside veer; midline; freeze option and load option from the spread formation. From a 2x2 alignment for example, we can run motion across the formation using this receiver as a pitch man or to rub the PLB (and drop the other inside receiver into pitch profile). We may also use short motion (much like a double slot). For midline, we motion long and use him as you would the H in a two back set (to near LB)...and we will usually never have a pitch man. The adjustment the defense makes on the motion determines which way we go with the veer...midline we go to the wider tackle...freeze option goes to the tighter tackle...load option vs. a reduced 5 technique. We are going to work out of the gun this year (not exclusively) and look to run the load option and the counter and tackle trap read options as well an inside veer scheme with a possible shovel exchange (Coach Campbell's crazy option). I've not run the jet sweep and would need to learn more about it before I would put it in. pdow
