i am considering the markham style double wing. it is difficult sometimes to sift through all the information. my question is to those who run it or have defended against it, what are your honest thoughts about the offense? is it tough, is it a gimmick, is it limiting, can it be successful on all levels, is it hard to prepare for, and any other thoughts or opinions would be greatly appreciated so i can make a more informed decision. thank you, jwt
I am the Def. Coordinator for Merrimack HS in NH, and we played a school who ran the Markham "California" Double Wing. We had success in stopping them in the 1st half but as the game went on our D got worn down and eventually lost the game. In our division, we have 3 teams that run a derivitive of the double wing, and the State Champion ran the Straight - T. If you have great personnel in the OL and the Backfield, it is a good offense. The problem of the double wing is if you find a team that is deciplined, and superior talent wise on defense. Then you will have the same problem that most T teams have, once its shut down then there is no real ability to change your attack. If you fall behind late in the game then it will be difficult to come from behind by driving the ball down the field.
A couple years ago, we played a Double Wing team in the playoffs. The head coach was an assistant for Don Markham, so he ran the exact replica of Markham's offense when he was at Bloomington HS (national record for total points scored in a season, something like 850 points!).
We came out and forced them to throw the ball. We cut their pullers, forced them to bounce outside on the pitch play and denied the cutback fairly well. Final score 26-12 us.
My opinion of the double wing? If your opponent figures you out. You're in trouble. Most DW teams cannot throw the ball well enough to get them out of a hole. If the team we played could have successfully thrown the ball, we would have lost the game.
I would say, it's a great offense to run if you don't have great personel. Coach Markham has squatty little strong kids on the line. A glorified guard playing QB and a FB that can run hard. His success came with his wings. They were horses.
If you have two good kids, you can make this offense work, up to a point.
I coach in the double wing and the only way to really stop the offense is to plug the inside, stop the fullback and make the team beat you laterally, if they cant and you string the plays out then they are forced to pass. We were fortuante to have a good passing attack so when if a team would slow us down a little on the ground we would pass the football. Many times we saw man coverage and if you see man coverage you can exploit it with crosses and good footwork from the receivers.
