How do you guys pick captains? I am going into my first year as a head coach and I decided to wait till the practice starts to pick captains because we really don't have any leadership in the senior class and I was hoping that this might encourage some people to step up this summer and work harder (we have had a very poor work ethic in recent years, but have managed to be fairly competitive). There really isn't much difference in work ethic this summer from last. I can't think of a senior who would be an ideal captain, and only 1 junior really deserves it. Anyway, go ahead and give me your 2 cents if you have time. FYI - small school, we get about 60 out for football 9-12
We usually let the players themselves vote for the captains. Then after counting all the votes, the staff then decides if the players chosen are "worthy" of the title. We usually have between 2-4 captains a season. My suggestion for you would be work them hard during the pre-season then let the players vote themselves. You would be surprised how critical the players themselves can be on each other.
I have never been a big advocate of Captains. What we do is alternate Seniors each game. As far as calling kids, etc. we believe that these duties are the responsibiliy of the Seniors and we let them know their responsibilities before the season. There are times that we let the kids vote on certain things but the majority of the time decisions are made by the coaching staff.
