Compilation of notes I have used in teaching "Reads" on all 3 levels. If you teach this style of "reads", this material is indispensable!
READING Middle of Field Open/Middle of Field Closed:
1. Lindy Infante said that the "area" was 15 to 25 yards deep & 2-3 yds inside the hashes current High School hashes.
2. Urban Meyer said that it was 15 to 30 yards deep & hash to hash (current college hashes).
3. Howard Schnellenberger told his QB's to determine MOFO/MOFC by looking THROUGH THE GOAL POSTS to determine MOFO/MOFC (& ROTATION).
In Coaching in D3 & D2, we used both Lindy Infante's "Reading the Square", and Sid Gillman's "Best Located Safety" reads. NOTE: Diagrams available upon request to COACHES who care to contact me!
In 1993 they moved the college hashes from 53' 4" from the sideline, in to 60' from the sidelines (40' apart). The High School hashes remained 53' 4" from the sideline, & 53' 4" apart.
That meant the following to US:
A) In High School he MOF "Square" remained 15-25 yards deep & 2-3 yards inside each hash (the OLD College rules before 1993)
B) In College (SINCE 1993) - we said that the "SQUARE" was 15-25 yds deep & from hash to hash.
C) In Pro ball - the MOF is considered "closed" if either safety is within 4 yards of the hash. Otherwise, it is considered "open".
This was Lindy Infante's teachings in College BEFORE they changed the hashes in 1993 (below):
QB READING THE “SQUARE” (MOF):
The “square” is an area in the middle of the field about 15 to 25 yards deep and about 2-3 yards inside of each hash. In reading the “square” the QB simply looks down the middle of the field. He should not focus on either safety but should see them both in his peripheral vision.
1. If NEITHER safety shows up in the “square” (middle of field open), and if both are deep, it will be a form of Cover 2 (a quick check of the corners will indicate whether it is man or zone coverage underneath). If neither of the safeties shows up in the “square” (middle of field open), and both are up close, it is cover 0 man/blitz.
2. If the strong safety shows up in the “square” (middle of field closed), it will probably be cover 3 weak cloud or sky.
3. If the weak safety shows up in the “square” (middle of field closed), it will probably be cover 3 strong sky or cloud (possibly cover 1 man-free).
NOTE: When EITHER of the safeties shows up in the “square” (middle of field closed), the best percentage area to throw the ball in is the side he CAME from.
RECEIVER READS:
H/Y/R read the “square” (for MOF open, or MOF closed).
X & Z read the corner on them (for bail; press; roll).
Something I find VERY INTERESTING is what Shawn Watson (U of Georgia) told me = was in the SEC, they NEVER see a MOFC Pre-Snap look move to a MOFO look after the snap. If that holds true in YOUR league, it can really HELP the QB!.
REDSKINS QB MANUAL (Joe Gibbs years):
QUARTERBACK READ SYSTEM:
KNOW THE SITUATION
PRE-SNAP LOOK THE DEFENSE – ANTICIPATE
READ ON THE DROP – ADJUST
THINK: PROTECTION/ADJUSTMENTS/PROGRESSION/TIMING/OUTLETS
BEWARE OF THE MIDDLE OF THE FIELD LOOKS – MOFO/MOFC
KNOW THE COVERAGE ELEMENTS:
ZONE 3 DEEP MOFC/2 DEEP MOFO
MAN 3 DEEP MOFC/2 DEEP MOFO
COMBO STRONG MOFO/WEAK MOFO
DOG/BLITZ MOFC/MOFO
This is the BASIS of the QB READING SYSTEM for Coryell, Joe Gibbs, ETC. In the NFL the MOF is open if there is no Safety within 4 yards of the hash (of half way from the hash to the numbers). ALL coverages fit into one of these two categories"
MOFO = "MIDDLE OF FIELD OPEN"
MOFC = "MIDDLE OF FIELD CLOSED"
