I’m on my way to becoming a coach one day. Right now I’m doing the student coaching at a local high school. Everyone I have talked too so far has told me I’m on the right track with the doing the student coaching. I really have been lately thinking about doing some volunteer work with the D.A.R.E. program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). All my life I have been all about being a positive role model…I never have drank alcohol or did drugs in my life and I think I could really enjoy this. I also love student coaching. In your opinion…would it look good having volunteer work with the D.A.R.E. program on my resume when I apply for a coaching/teaching position? Besides student coaching, what else would look good on a resume?

I believe you are moving in the right direction. Involving yourself in these types of organizations (D.A.R.E., FCA, etc) makes you attractive as a school staff member, but more importantly this involvement benefits you personally and the kids with whom you are around every day. My suggestion would be to display your passion for coaching on a daily basis...go above and beyond what is expected of a volunteer coach...show that you want to excel in that profession...so when the time comes that the head coach of where you are currently at gets a phone call for a recommendation, his response will be much more than "he volunteered." However, if you do a great job, he is likely to offer you a position himself when one becomes available. Coaches with true passion are very hard to come by...be passionate. pdow
