On the field, an assistant coach will have many responsibilities. In my system, the offense will require at least 3 coaches for communication. The Offensive Coordinator will be in the box calling plays; one coach will be signaling plays to skill positions; and another coach to signal to the offensive line. The defense will have a similar communication system; offensive coordinator in the box and a signaler on the field. Various coaches will be responsible for identifying defensive personnel; Oline coach for identifying the box, WR coach for identifying DB alignment; and QB coach for identifying coverages. Each coach will be responsible for making corrections to their position groups during the game, as well as half time. The expectation is that communication during the game is abundant; the head coach will be able to toggle between offense and defense during the game, while the offensive and defensive coaches will be assigned headsets that only allow communication to their side of the ball. The expectation is that during half time, the entire coaching staff will meet as a whole group to discuss necessary adjustments before addressing their position groups. After the game is over, film will be uploaded to Hudl and each coach will begin breaking down and grading film. They will be expected to have film graded by our team meeting on Sunday at 1:00 pm before meeting with their position group at 4:00. Before arriving on Sunday, each coach should already have watched the available scout film, which is typically the opponents last three games, and bring to the table any corrections or adjustments that need to be made. Collectively as a staff, the offensive and defense will discuss their thoughts on the scouting film and devise the game plan for the upcoming week.
Off the field, the coaches will have a variety of responsibilities. Each day after practice, two coaches will have laundry duty. Ideally, each coach has laundry 1 day per week, and must have the equipment washed and ready for practice the following day. The coaches on laundry duty are also expected to chaperone the players waiting on rides and supervise the locker room until all players have left. The coaches are also responsible for painting the game field each week. Painting will take place on Wednesday to prepare for the alternating JV or varsity game that week. Coaches are expected to be professional both on and off the field, and carry themselves as an ambassador of the program. They will be expected to not post anything on social media that would reflect negatively on the program. They are required to attend all pep rallies, team pictures, parades, awards night, and other team activities. After the season, assistant coaches will be expected to operate and monitor athletes in the weight room. Half of the coaches will attend the morning lift and half will run the after school lifting session. During summer coaches will be encouraged to go on vacation, but will be expected to communicate their days off in advance. We will have a weightlifting session from 7:30 to 11:30 am. Coaches will be expected to arrive early and help with setting up the weight room and organize the drills. The expectation is that coaches are students of the game and continually trying to learn new things. Once a year, coaches will attend the annual coaches clinic to perfect their craft.
Loyalty to the program and head coach are paramount to having a successful football program. The coaches have to be bought in to the idea of community and family. A coach that is slandering or disclosing confidential information about the program or coach is a liability to the success of the program. If the staff is loyal to the program and head coach then they will act in a way that only works to benefit the entire operation. Quite simply, a coach that is loyal can be trusted, and one that isn't cannot be trusted. Without trust in each member of the staff, there is a cap on the potential for how successful the team can be.
