“Option on me” is a systemic way to run the option offense providing a best-case scenario at the start of each play. The system allows the quarterback to read defensive alignment and put the offense in the advantage.
The three plays that make up the “option on me” are the mid-line, inside veer, and load option.
As the quarterback gets to the line of scrimmage, he is looking at defensive indicators to call the play. The first look is at the weak side to find the alignment of the overhang defender. If. If the overhang defender is off the L.O.S. and at inside linebacker depth, inside veer is the check. With the inside veer, the offensive line is on a down path. The offensive tackle path takes him to the inside linebacker, the offensive guard path takes him to the 1-technique, and the fullback is on a path to the guards outside hip. The quarterback can now read pull or give based on the reaction of the 5-technique. If the ball is pulled, the overhang becomes the pitch key.
If the weak or open side is not a good setup, the quarterback will go to the second part of “option on me” and survey the tight end side. The quarterback’s first look is to the near man to the ball. If the defender is in a 2-technique or 3-technique, mid-line is called. With mid-line, the guard is on a down path to the play side inside linebacker, the tackle has an out block on 5-technique or 7-technique, and the tight end will have the overhang. The fullback’s path is directly down the midline of the center, and the quarterback reads the reaction of the defensive tackle.
Finally, the quarterback will check to the loaded option if the defensive alignment takes away the mid-line to the strong side. This occurs if the defensive aligns in a 1-technique to the tight end side. The loaded option is run to the outside with the fullback either loading the 7-technique or the 9-technique depending on the alignment of the overhang.
The advantages of “option on me” are that the quarterback has control to put the offense in a winnable situation on every play. The disadvantage is that it is a difficult process that takes lots of practice time to master. However, when it is executed correctly, it is unstoppable.
