STUNTING FROM THE 52/34 DEFENSE:
by Bill Mountjoy
Vs. the opponent's running game, I believe you need STUNTS for several reasons:
1. To be in the best defense against different types of line blocking.
2. Need them to give the offense more to think about. Any time the defense can make the offense think it has gained an advantage.
3. Need variations and stunts to take advantage of defensive personnel advantages.
4. I believe stunts are a definite factor in keeping defensive morale.
5. Stunts and shifting defenses are the toughest defenses to move the ball against.
THE "SIX YARD SITUATION":
We do not play our BASE defense on first and ten. We like to really come after the offense on first down, with out stunts and blitzes (trying to bring one more than the offense can block). Trying to throw the offense for a 2 yard loss.
We try to create a "six yard situation". That simply means they have to average six yards per try on second and third down to make a first down. Then we can play our base defense and coverage on those downs.
CALLING STUNTS VS. THE RUN (BASE 52/34).
NOTE: We ae concerned with 4 areas: Middle, Inside Tackle, Outside Tackle, and Wide:
#1. In order to strengthen the MIDDLE we like our "A" stunt (see ATTACHMENT)
#2. In order to strengthen INSIDE TACKLE we like our "C" stunt (see ATTACHMENT)
#3. In order to strengthen OUTSIDE (OFF) TACKLE we like our "D" stunt (see ATTACHMENT)
#4. Vs WIDE plays we feel out normal defense will handle the wide stuff (with 2 men outside the offensive end). If needed - we can use our "B" stunt (with ILB either shooting, or playing normal and going into
into pursuit).
