Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coach Campbell (and others) Finally just got done breaking down last year's game videos. I finished with our second scrimmage. We scrimmage team a couple classes higher than us and usually do pretty well. Well this year we got beat up pretty bad. Part of it was due to being overpowered but part of it was due to not doing a good job blocking line twists. The ran a 6-2 and ran twists between the 2 and 4 techs, and the 4 and 9 techs. Obviouslly our kids need to practice quite a bit against the twists but do you have any coaching points to stress when dealing with them.
Coach the use of zone blocking schemes in your offensive blocking structure is the best way or most effeicent way to pick up twist and or slanting fronts when running the ball. Coach CAmpbell
We are a zoning team and we do pretty well when combo blocking 1st to 2nd level. We do have problems zoning 2 defenders on the same level. With the twist between the 2 and 4/5 techniques I was having the G and T take a lateral step inside and then block what shows. The 2 would step back and clear for the 4/5 and the Guard would have problems because the slanting 4/5 would not always cross his face. The tackle would step inside and as the 4/5 slanted in he would pick him up leaving the 2 free. If we were running Load Option, the TE would step to combo the 4/5 and then climb to the second level to block the LB. How would you step to take care of this? Lets say that we are running the Load Option. It would be nice if we knew when it was going to happen and whether the 2 or 4/5 were clearing but, of course, we don't. Also, in this particular case, the 2 was so big that, unless our G was aggressive, he had trouble blocking him after taking the lateral (zone) step inside. We really don't see to much of this but I hate to have a team screw us up so badly, even in a scrimmage. Thanks in advance jm

Coach don't chance you footwork because of up front twist vs a 4 or 5 tech. with a 2 tech. on the guard you would get a base call by the tackle and the guard and center would work their combo over with anticipation of picking up the two tech. Please tell me what you tell your back when he gets the ball and then I can take this further. Coach CAmpbell

Coach yes the center and playside guard will work together playside with backside guard and tackle working a duece to backside LBer. This play should be built of split flow with the fullback on the inside shoulder of the 5 tech. If not built off of split flow then must boot action the backside 5. Coach CAmpbell
Coach, thanks for the reply. I am not running the inside or outside zone but need to zone this when running Load Option, Outside Veer or our Power play. What messes me up is when the center steps to the playside to combo with the guard on the 2, and the 2 drops and twists outside of the tackle. The center, as the 2 leaves, goes to the second level for the backside LB. The tackle has the Ace block on the 4/5 but if he stays with him, the 2 will twist around to the spot vacated by the 4/5 tech and be untouched. We teach our TE to step to the 4/5 to combo up to the LB so when he sees the 4/5 disappear, he goes upfield leaving no one to pick up the 2 who has twisted around the slanting 4/5. I hope that I am making sense here. It does confuse our kids as well as their coach.
Coach, The point is the TE never gets into a combo because of the fast slant of the 4/5 to the guard area. If I have him stay with the 4/5 he will miss the LB coming over the top. If I have him come off and block the 2 who is twisting to his gap the LB is free. If he comes off of the combo and blocks the LB, the 2 is free. Dilemma for me. Am I totally off base here. It seems to make sense to me but, as my wife tells me, sometimes I am in my own little world. Am I making sense? By the way, it looks like I will be able to make the clinic in NYC. Am definitely looking forward to meeting everyone. jm

Coach if your opponent is giving you a 4i then take the ball outside. I'm looking forward to meeting you. This should be a good working clinic. Coach CAmpbell
