Help! My head coach insists on having a downlineman in the c gap or power hole. In his words his job is to blow up the c gap. My problem is that I don't know how to teach that technique. Do any of you D line coaches align a man in the strongside c gap? If you do what is the stance, technique, keys and reads that you teach. Thanks in advance.........
The c gap is where I postioned my strong side DE when we are in a 43 look. We had him in a good three pt. stance ft stagger heel to toe with the hand to the man down. We are attacking on the sanp of the ball and reading the V of the neck of the Near OTackle. If your man pulls away from you, get in his hip pocket and go with him. If your man disappears down inside, then 1. look for the trap from the opposite. If you are being trapped then outside rip ( I used to call it wrong, not anymore. Thanks Coach Golla.) through the trapper. 2. G block, treat just like a trap. 3. Look for the kick out by the fullback, if this is the case then outside rip him. 4. Feel for backside pressure if there is a TE or wing to your side. I like to teach a spin move when we get outside pressure. Some coaches don't like to do this. I feel that if you rep it enough and sell it then your players will be able to perform it adequately during a pressure situation.
G block - When the PSG pulls toward the call side and attempts to trap/kickout the PSDE. You can really get earholed by this block if you have your head up your rearend.
