Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
Coaches, I need help with some mis-direction plays from the I formation. We run the basic stuff (ISO, inside zone, toss, speed option, etc). I realize that we can put a wing in there and have some good stuff coming back from that but I really don't want to build in that tendency if I can help it. Any suggestions?
FB Trap and FB Trap Option are excellent, check the archives for more info. Also Slot your Tight end and your can run a counter iso scheme. Say you are in I slot Open Right, Fake FB Dive Left and Dive the TB to the Right 4 hole, QB reverse pivots with FB faking the mesh left, then QB hands off to TB and can Boot away or fake drop back playaction, Then just Isolation block playside with TE fold blocking and isolating playside backer. Also if TE is isolated you can run a check with me and motion him (or not) to a 1 and 5 or a 2i and 5 for best angles. The boot off of this is also good, FB in Flat, TE Drag, postcorner the playside X. Also can run Counter GT.
Also can run Belly scheme (double dive), You can block it just like the iso scheme I mentioned before except the QB/FB mesh on the same side as the TB 4 hole dive, Then QB sprints to the perimeter off of the second mesh. I would also highly suggest running The belly as a Midline (jill)blocking sheme play. You Read The DT preferablly in a 3 Technique, psg scoops inside to psib and blocks for the fb dive, the pst walls out the DE, and the TE fold blocks and again isolates the psib to FS, but he is blocking for the TB, IF 3 tech takes dive then QB pulls and hands off to TB coming down hill and diving in the B gap following the TE. You could explore all the possibilities that the midline has to offer, again there is alot of useful information on this website especially in the archives to help you out. Also check out the Play manager there is a cutup of the regular midline out of Pro I, but you could (Belly) it the same way.
Coach Hoov a good misdirection play comes off what I call 32-33 Swing. The 30 series is our Belly series so it has the QB reversing out with the FB running his belly path and the Tailback going opposite the call receiving the pitch as the QB comes around. The offensive line will zone over towards the play called. This play takes advantage of the defensive end playing off the back heels of the backside tackle as he releases inside. Coach Campbell
I agree with Woodman on the "double dive" Belly scheme out of the I. We have run this religiously for over 10 years. Everyone knows it's one of our base plays, and it is still very difficult for teams to shut down. Here are a few other misdirection runs we use in the I formaiton:
-FB counter-trap off of ISO action: Have the FB take a crossover to the butt of the backside guard. On the second step, have him plant and cut back, just after taking a reverse pivot handoff from the QB. Bend back and run off the typical "Wing T FB trap" blocking scheme. The TB must make a great, hard fake into the backside B gap. We have found this to be much more effective in creating false flow than faking a toss or option to the backside. When defenses see the "I"...they are trying to stop the lead. It looks just like ISO / lead to the LB's and they will flow in the direction your playside OL are downblocking. The result is a devistating, quick-hitting FB counter play that will also keep teams honest on your base ISO stuff.
-HB counter Trey off of ISO action: The backside G and T pull to the POA, which is the playside C gap. The G kicks out, using a trap technique, the first defender at or beyond the hole. The T pulls and leads up through. The FB fills hard in the vacated backside B gap. The tailback takes 2 hard counter steps to the outside hip of the backside tackle, making sure his head and shoulders go with him. Plants, cuts back and takes the handoff, following the blocking scheme.
-We also run a WB reverse, but I got the impression you were trying to stay away from this scheme, so I will not elaborate here.
Also, if you run the "offset I", and teams over compensate for you offset FB, these plays are even more effective.
