Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
coaches, I know an OC who runs a little option out of double slot and trips open, mostly midline jill scheme. He wants to run an option to the weakside of trips off of midline action to the weak side with "tails" motion by the tight slot (which they run midline and counter dive to the trips with) to get in pitch relationship. They are going to fake midline mesh weak, to hold the lb's and base block the front side and pitch off of the weak force player. I love the idea of running option away from Trips, and personally I know that inside veer is great as well as fb trap and fb trap option, 17/18 Load option and possibly fb speed option weak with the right defense. However, I am not sold on base blocking it and reaching the 5 tech, it's just to difficult a block, but they do it on jet sweep which obviously hits the perimeter alot faster. I envision the 5 disrupting the qb's path and forcing him to bow back, and letting pursuit catch up to him. Also, there is no one accountable for psib if he scrapes outside. Am I right on these concerns and what advice would you guys have for this coach, is it worth running what so ever. The staff is not intersted in Inside veer, which I know is the best answer. Thanks guys
I agree with Coach Campbell that inside veer should be the play to use paired with load option or midline back to the trips side. I would also concentrate on single receiver routes away from trips if they squeeze the backside invert into the box to fast play your option. you will have prblems at some part of your season being able to log block the five tech. Read him instead.
Good point, coach. We scrimmaged last night and had great success with "stealing" the hitch route with the single receiver away from trips vs. a tight or no invert. I like running the inside veer away from trips when there is no invert. If there is an invert, we will run it to the trips side and usually try to wall PSLB w/ either #2 or #3 receiver. pdow
The staff is not sold on Inside Veer because they think it takes too much practice time and they don't really understand the big picture of option football, despite my efforts. (I've even let the OC borrow Coach Campells Option Manual and Option on Me video). I coached on this staff last year (assistant OC) They do run 3-step choice to the single receiver quit often and has been very succesfull. To the trips the run a counter dive type play to the tight slot in whirly motion. If I was OC I would run things just like all you said. I've also had success with previous teams with the IV to the trips w/ Whirly motion just like pdow said, Can either pitch off of 43 Sam or SS, depending on how you block the perimeter, it is nice to mix it up. To me a flexbone team in Trips is very similiar in concept to Coach Camphell's Pro I in getting the defense to unbalance and then have the ability to run Option on Me with IV and Load to the openside and Midline. Also, this Friday this team ran that trips weak option play in their first game and it resulted in a 7 yard loss.
Inside Veer would be the best option. The only difficulty might be in blocking the play side backer, and if you have the tackle rip inside the 5 then youd like to get a little contact on him because if the tackle free releases then the 5 can hang and play both the dive and the QB, whereas if you get some contact on him he really has to haul to get to the dive.

Follow your outside invert rule to the openside and you need not worry about not getting the playside LBer blocked. If no invert it's 3 against 2 defenders. Coach CAmpbell
