Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
A while back we had a discussion going about missing practice. It snowballed into off-season workouts (a growing problem for us), and Coach Cella had a gutsy idea: They don't make the workouts, they don't play varsity.
I've talked it over with our staff and we're going to give the idea a go starting next season. Our criteria is built around lifting during the school year, participating in at least one other sport, and attending off season workouts/camps. I think we started pretty small, but it will be a major improvement from what we had last season.
I'd like to hear if any others have this type of policy, and how it's going for you. Basically, any good ideas to increase off-season participation would be appreciated.

Coach,
i have a similar policy. Although it's a different situation here in the netherlands (no school program, clubs that are founded by football-enthousiast who pay money to practice and play) i do encourage my players to do a different sport in the off season. I have many players practicing with different sports such as my RB (does racketball for quickness), my TE (plays basketball for jump improvement, catching and field position awareness), my linemen all lift weights, i even have a safety that does jazz-ballet becausde it improves his motoric skills and his balance. I tell them that they don't have to like the sport but that it's a mean to an end. And it's true, they all appear fresh and ready to go at the first practice. And they've all improved on some level.
Good luck with your team, all the best from the netherlands

Coach,
Good that the parents are willing to keep an eye on their kids in the off-season. It's incredibly how much working hard in the off-season can benefit you in the (short) regular football season. I wish you well with your kids. Our teams has try-outs for new players coming sunday. Hope we will get some new talents. It's so hard here in Holland to love football....I Need players badly.

On this subject of "no practice, no play Varsity"............
Does this mean that they can miss practices (if so, how many) and still play on the J.V.? Seems to me that you'll have some younger kids (especially in today's society) being satsified to miss a few practices and play on the J.V.
We pretty much require athletes to play a spring sport. If you arent a baseball player then there is a spot on the track team. Either way the athletes get some running and and have a chance to improve their speed.

i 100% agree with your policy. i have run into so many problems with the guys who think football starts in august and ends in october. (of course, since the state playoffs are in november, this is the main reason our season ends in october, but......) my school board and administrators told me that i could absolutely not implement anything of any sort here. so, i do my best to encourage 2, if not 3 sport activity, and try my best to mandate year long lifting.
i wish you luck. the hardest part will be sticking to the policy. what happens when the next michael vick walks into your office and says he's not doing anything? that's the hardest part.

This past off-season we adopted the same policy, with an even more ambiquous ending,,, You don't lift, You don't play... We lost some good football players over it, but we were 4-0 and ranked 11th in the state until injury bug turned into Godzilla and ate up 4 qb's, a 280 lb o lineman, a lber, and our head coach even got hurt!!!! Most of the injuries were broken bones,,, I say cuz we hit harder than we ever have... we will be champions once kids realize that everyone has that shot to play, but you have to work...Just stick to your guns this offseason. We are going to...
