I have 2 brand new varsity guards, 1 missed the previous season due to grades, and the other is a converted JV Tackle. Both of them have quick feet and have put a great deal of time int the weight room. My question is are there any drills that I can use to get them upfield on sweeps. They tend to drift outside, and the ILB's and FS tend to make the tackle. Watching T and Delaware Wing T guards they seem like RR cars on rails. Any help would be appreciated.
Invest in four 20' sticks of 3/4" pvc sprinkler pipe from your local home depot (the kind with the manufacturers bell on one end. Make two big rings with them (connecting two together - do not glue them) and place the two on the ground forming a figure eight (with about 2 feet seperating the two). Have one lineman start in the middle and one start at the top of the 'eight'. Have them race the figure eight three times. First one to catch the other gets to knock him down. Put your other linemen outside the figure eight just wide enough to allow the racers to fit between them and the ring. If the widen up, knock 'em down. This will cure your wide pull arcs.
A very simple drill is to have them line up on the "End Line" and pull down the line and around the Goalpost. Have a bag a couple of yards from the post so that they can't drift out to far. Have them dip and pick grass as they pull around the post to seal inside. Simple but effective.
