Installing Today’s Hybrid Pistol Offense Run & Pass from Top to Bottom
This manual provides you with the full offensive line, receiver, and quarterback mechanics for installing each offensive play presented. Coach Campbell has left no stone unturned for implementing today’s Pistol Offense into your program.
What are your favorite running plays against 8 man fronts? Do you always get out of a running play when you see an 8 man front or does this show a tendency?? I know trap and inside zone are bad plays against 8 man fronts, but plays where there is down/combo blocking and pulling like power and counters, and perimeter plays like toss and ourside zone are good. Is this accurate? Option is great too but we are not an option offense.
What about defenses who start out in a 2 deep shell and right before the snap bring a saftey down to for an 8 man front?? What is the best way to attack this?
Throw the ball!!!! Sread into a three wide receiver set. Then you should have a minimum of six defenders on seven offensive players. If they are able to keep 8 in the box they have left a man uncovered or are playing straight man coverage. Either situtation invites you to throw the ball.
Like mg said, throw it. If you can't throw it, they're going to beat you anyway. I've had squads that we'd throw a ton and teams would run 5 in the box and stop the run and could run 9 in the box and stop our throwing.
With all things being equal, i'd try to throw.
Personally, I like to spread it with 3 wide and run/throw 60-40%
Work your misdirection and carry out fakes. The Wing - T philosphy of fakes is very deceptive. Try to incorporate at least one more fake into your regular run plays (i.e. boot fake, sweep fake, reverse fake, pass fake, etc) Try to get the LBs to pick themselves off and or loosen up to respect the flank manuever. Also, teach those slot backs and Zs to crack the DE and/or OLB in the 8 man fronts. Real quick you'll see the defense adjust to a 7 man front. If the coaches won't, the kids will. Nobody likes getting earholed over and over again.
8 man fronts are also ripe for play action. Just tag your regular run play with a route (let the line know when they hear the tag it means 30 blocking) and *Voila*, you've got a sweet play action scheme to suck in the LBs and throw to the windows in the 3 deep zone. And if they are manned up, throw to the two receiver side with rub routes. It only takes a few more minutes of practice time to install and can be a great equalizer. It is the same philosophy pitchers take against a crowding hitter. Away, away, away, then bust 'em high and tight with some chin music!!!...
Go Unbalanced with a twins look on the strong unbalanced side and run option. They either have to move an outside backer to your slot or play man to man. Either way, you now regain the advantage.
