Can anyone help me with the "free kick" rule that follows a fair catch.
George Allen's Special Teams book talks about a rule that allows a team that fair catches a kick to have a free attempt at a Field Goal. Is this also in High School football? Does the team that is kicking lineup like a kickoff, or do they snap it and hold it like a field goal?
Evidently, the defense is not permitted to defend this kick, but they can return it.
I talked to a group of officials after a freshman game today, but only one of them had heard of the rule.
For those of you wondering about why you would do it, it would be for the following situation:
At the end of a half with just a few seconds left, you have the opponent pinned deep in their own end. They punt. You fair catch the ball at the 25 or 30. Their is time enough for 1 play. Instead of going for the TD, you take the option to "free kick" a Field Goal.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
